Think This Is Overpriced???

I inquired from the dealer about the price of this:...
It"s that plastic"weatherstrip" at the bottom of the windshield where the wiper arm base comes out of...
I was quoted $ 400 + for parts & labor.
I think that is steep!! It's a piece of plastic for god's sake...might as well be made of 14K gold for that price.

Dealer Overcharging Experience

Thought I'd share this...
Now i have heard about dealers ripping peoples arms & legs off but I never thought it was that bad until......

I had problems with water leaking inside due to the PLASTIC "weatherstrip" located at the bottom/across the windshield where the wiper arm base comes out of is broken.
So I called the dealer for a replacement and the charge was $600
parts & Labor.

I did find however the OEM part online for $37 (on sale)
and my trusty mechanic friend will install it for free.

Man what a rip off!!!

The worst part is that this dealer/manager is my co-worker's brother-in-law...
...and I thought I was going to get a break. NOT!!!!!

Almost 6 month later the original price increased $200.

Merged

Next time don't start another thread on this if your memory doesn't remember.

Sorry! Senior moment!!
Reason being I just bought the replacement part recently(waited too long)...
...and I was satisfied with the price...Forgot about my previous post.
For a while I've been putting a tin can/plastic/towel: underneath my steering wheel to catch the drips when it rains. Soon I don't have to do that.

that is NOT a dealer overcharging experience.

it's NOT the part you're paying for.
it's the LABOR.

go to a parts place, tell them you work for Toyota. Works for me....I have a Toyota/Lexus ID card but they normally don't even ask to see it..they just give ya cost pricing!

He found the part for $37, and it was installed for free. Saved himself either $363 or $563. Either way, do you think that's a 3 hour job (I''m guessing that's what they charged)? Yes I'm cynical....but, for warranty they concentrate on replacing parts that have times they can easily beat and after warranty it's whatever they can get away with. It's a numbers game and has nothing to do with customer satisfaction. And they make as many, if not more, mistakes than the Pep Boys mechanics....actually, I use the local Pep Boys for stuff I don't want to do and they've given me better results with fewer call backs on other makes of cars than the MB dealer. I don't mind honest profit, but MB dealers are WAY off the scale. Especially when the C class has so many failures and they have the experience to beat the book times.

I guess I'm pretty lucky with a good SA at my local dealership.
No BS games. I know the MB Tech personally, so I know exactly how long something takes to do. They straight up tell me: "oh, that's a 5 minute job. Let me take your car in right now, go get a free soda, and it should be waiting for you, by the time you get back." Not one complaint so far.....

Everybody should be treated that way, but as witnessed by the many negative posts, they are not. That's why the dealers are bad mouthed and people constantly recommend independent mechanics. If everyone were treated like you are at the local dealer they would be using them. But let's face it, they can make more money scamming their customers. It's all about booking the mechanics for maximum hours each day. A friend recently took his car in at 8:00 AM. Picked it up at 1:00 PM, and they tried to charge him for 6 hours labor (forgot to hold it longer!). It was really a 2 hour job. As long as there's a $ incentive (bonus for the SA, more piece work for less hours for the mechanic) this will continue. The incentive should be happier customers who will return and buy another car. End of rant

Carlos, what dealer and SA is that? Very rare for any dealer. It used to be that way for many years at MB of Laguna Niguel but they got new management from what I heard and it's rip off city now. My oil drain plug was leaking on our SLK, they quote $3,455 to fix it, nice huh. Brought it back without saying anything to another SA, got quoted $800, better. Took it to a great mechanic in SD, $60 including fresh oil. Same with HOI, $3,000 quote for repairs and all I wanted was an oil change. None of the repairs were necessary.
