You can get OEM glass at a good glass shop for about $350 for PPG or Pilkington, both OEM for MB. Not covered under warranty. Heck my wiper blades were broke the frst time I used it 2 weeks after I bought the car and they wouldn't cover it. But they did offer to sell them to me at 25% over list price

I ordered my windshield from the Mercedes dealer. It is made by PPG, but has the official MB stamp on it, so it is the OEM part. List price was $331.50, and they gave me a discount for being an MBCA member. This is a PPG Solextra windshield with blue tint for the Sport Sedan. Installation through a premium glass shop (or MB dealer) is about $120 here.
Although this is not exactly cheap, it is affordable, considering you are getting an OEM windshield and not an aftermarket one. The OEM windshields seem to withstand life in "the land of flying rocks" better than the others.
If you order through the dealer, they will want your serial number to order the correct windshield (apparently there are several variations).

When my husband and I purchased our cars, they offered us Windshield Protection. For mine (and my dad's) cars it was only $300, but for my husband's it was $600. Apparently the lady who did our paperwork gave me the wrong price ($300). The protection covers up to $5000 worth of repairs or replacements for 4 years.
If people are looking at getting new cars, it's something to consider.
My mother had to replace hers in her C240 wagon, and it cost over $800 because of the rain sensor.

it's usually only around $400-500 to fix the windshield with OEM glass even if you do have the windshield wiper sensor. All that's different is the glass with the sensor has the holes that allow the sensor to see through, so to speak.

I have a great glass guy that gets me deals and finds the hard to find glass for the Austin and Porsche. But Im mixed on coverage for windows on Mercedes. In the past on my E class, It has been the toughest windshield of ant car Ive owned. There have been a couple of time I thought I should have lost the whole thing and nothing but a nick. I don't know if this new one is the same? I already have a fish eye in the center
But most class shops will replace it with the real PPG factory winshield if you specify that you want it. On my Suburban I could not keep a PPG winshield in it. We changed to a different brand and no problems yet.

All of the factory original windows on my C230k are stamped PPG Solextra, and they have the star emblem. So my new windshield is an exact duplicate of the factory original. I am sure PPG builds these to MB specs, since it has the star emblem.
In my experience, glass on German cars is harder (more durable) than a lot of other cars. My MB windshield withstood several assaults by flying rocks that would have totally broken other windshields. In general, windshields don't last very long in New Mexico.
Incidentally, another alternative to glass insurance is to lower the deductible (maybe $100) on your comprehensive insurance. It costs very little additional money.

Most car insurances have glass replacement coverage. It is not very expensive to add. I've always had $0 deductibles, but I know people that have $50 deductibles. You might already have this coverage, just call your insurace agent and find out.
