Street = AMG is better (More Driver friendly)
Track = M Power is better (More Driver oriented)
I'm very impressed with the range of AMG models from Mercedes, however lack of "next generation" transmission is a turn off for me personally.
I'm also very impressed with M Power's "RACE car" like offerings. M3 and M5 impress the hell outta me, good for street and AWSOME for track. However, although SMG is great for track, it's not so friendly for the passengers on the street, or so that I've heard.
I love the rivalry between these two companies, competition only benefits the consumers (Meaning us!) Almost as good as the rivalry between Impreza WRX and Lancer EVO

M seems to understand (and make readily available) the pure handling aspect of chassis tuning on a higher level than AMG.
No doubt, AMG builds fine engines. However, they tune and "upgrade" their US version brakes, ESP, and suspension to appeal to the dilettante. For the investment required to obtain Germany's most rewarding rides, I regret to admit that an M may be my next purchase.

M for sure, you cant beat the sound of an M3 revving, and the M3 is just the entry level

wow, I thought this would be extremely lop-sided, b/c after-all, it is posted on an MB forum... but apparently it's not...
M's and AMG's are pretty different and you have to look at what you want:
If you want a car that handles very well, that you feel connected to, and want the pure feel of the driving experience without all the aids and nuances that take away from the experience, get the M. But, you have to withstand the facts that it's not that comfortable in many situations (especially sitting in traffic), but when you start beating the **** out of it, you forget everything else... It's very raw and unrefined.
If you want a car with brute power and strength, and would like great stop light to stop light runs, alongside with comfort and refinement, then an AMG is for you.
Either way, both are great cars and great choices.
are you going to be joining me on the darkside?

Phil, I couldn't agree with you more.
BMW M cars are seriously no compromise cars that are seriously track worthy. They've cut no corners with the BMW M cars and fuel efficiency is not of any importance whatsoever; for example, the BMW M cars have individual throttle butterflies per each cylinder for more spontaneous response.
Additionally, the BMW M cars deliver power in a completely different fashion than the Mercedes-Benz AMG vehicles. The BMW M cars employ the high-revving high-horsepower concept. In other words, in normal driving your RPMs will go fairly high (at least 3000) before you would normally shift; in fact, if you shift too early with the SMG transmission there might be a small jerk during the shift. The BMW encourages you to use the power.
The AMG on the other hand wants you to know that you have power and lots of it in reserve waiting for you. In normal driving, your RPMs will barely exceed 2000 RPMs on take off (compared to the M's much higher RPMs) due to the massive torque the AMG engine produces. This torquey response allows for the transmission gear ratios to be set in a way that minimizes engine revolutions while still achieving high top speed for each respective gear(taller gears). Since you're using only 2000 RPMs out of over 6000, the car's engine is barely breaking a sweat.
It really boils down to this; are you an Bentley kind of guy or a Ferrari kind of guy (in terms of power delivery). You might not be the one based on which car you like better. Ferrari is more about horsepower, high revving, and more akin to the BMW when the Bentley is attuned to the AMG having lots of power in reserve that you'll probably never use until you're on the track.
As for me, I'm relatively decided that a BMW M3 will be my next acquisition. Honestly, the AMG cars are more suited to every day driving, however the M3 is truly a car that truly priovides pure enjoyment as its main priority compared to the practical and powerful AMG cars.

Too many to list
I say M because they're more exclusive and have different engines in each M series...unlike AMG, it's the same engine in all the classes but just detuned or upgraded to produce more or less power. Also, M cars are usually NA while most AMGs are supercharged. It's easier to produce tons of power by turbo-charging or supercharging.
