Turbo Boost!

In Fast & Furious, the Supra has a sharp, whistling sound, like a high pressure cooker when you let out the steam.

What is this noise? Is it related to turbo? overturboboost? etc?
Someone please explain step by step.

It's been a short while since I last watched the movie, but from what I can recall...

It should be the turbo system itself, revving up several thousand RPMs. Because the turbo unit itself is relatively small, it has the potential to hit very high RPMs, generating a high-pitched whistling sound under high revs. The other suspect is the blow-off valve, but I don't think it has the high-pitched whine, just the sound of gas being let off under pressure.

yeah, that sound is what you get when the turbo spins upto speed, usually upwards of 50k rpm, can go as hi as 100k rpm, and then the woosh of highly compressed air being shot through the pipes to the engine

Its the BOV (blow-off valve) relieving pressure that the turbo has created when the accelerator is let off. Notice the sound happens when the car is slowing down or between shifts when the gas is not pressed down.

Most ricers get the loudest BOV possible because they think people will think they have who knows what under their hood.

A good purge valve will send the best civics running...lol

yeah whats your hearing is the turbo spooling up, and the BOV that almost sounds like a can of soda opening. And Some of that sound can even be the exhausts they have.

The blow off valve make this noise because between shifting, the "throttle body" is closed but the turbo still spinning which created accessive pressure build up and so the "Blow Off Valve" release that pressure to prevent damage to turbo fin.

Linh, when are you going to get rid of that s/c on your SLK and get a turbo and make Vin Diesel proud?

dont forget that when film scorers make sound efx for a movie they often layer many sounds together that dont have anything to do with the thing thats supposed to make the sound to make it sound much more ferocious, like the cars in fast and furious. you can bet there is much more than car engine sounds in there... i have read many articles on designing sounds for fast cars in movies where they used dragster and rocket engine sounds and such as well as other big sounding stuff to make it sound bigger.

Actually, in high boost turbo cars, the sound is like the Super in the F&F. I did a little of modify in my friend Volvo V40, with 14PSI of boost and a cone filter, you can sure hear the high pitch whoosh sound from the turbo.
