Metal nipples in rubber part of strut top hat bearing

What are they for- aside from letting you know which way the u-shaped bracket is supposed to fit under the hood? One of the nipples on one of my rubber pieces is slightly rounded (long story- not my fault). When I slip the bracket over the top- the bracket doesn't have any more slop than the strut with the undamaged piece. I really don't see what it's there for- it has such a sloppy fit anyway- and the strut is connected elsewhere in the suspension much more securely. Just curious because I really don't want to have to buy a complete new assembly when the slightly damaged piece doesn't fit the bracket with any more slop than the good side.

the tabs are just there to hold the top bracket in place and prevent it frm spinning arround... you'll be fine as long as you tighten the 21mm nut properly

That's pretty much what I was thinking. If those nipples were really there to hold things together and take any kind of force- they would be much larger, made out of a little stronger metal than what looks to be cast aluminum, and have a little tighter fit on those brackets.

Side question- how far down does that little half-assed retaining nut (looks like a threaded washer) go on the strut? Just as far down as there are threads on the strut? Never paid any attention when I took them apart- wanna make sure I don't have it too loose or too tight.
