ESP Problem-- 1st thread
I own a 2001 C240
Today, I took my car to the shop to have a o2 sensor and a mass air meter installed. When I picked the car up, it was shifting rather hard into the gears during my city travel. However, on the interstate, this problem went away. After I got off the interstate, the problem was gone and it was shifting like normal.
A few seconds later, the warning light saying to take the car to the shop b/c of a ESP malfunction; and the car wouldn't move. THe engine was still running fine, but the car wouldn't go over 4mph.. It was just enough to make it to a parking lot, etc.
I pulled over, put on my flashers, and turned off the car. I started it back up, and all was fine. No light, perfect operation. About every 10 miles the light came back on, but only during city driving.Once I got back to the interstate, it was fine.
My question is, What the hell is wrong with my car? I know esp problems are expensive, and I would really appreciate another opinion than the person I'm paying to fix it. The mechanic said it might be the air mass meter, because the part number was one digit off, and it could have put the computer into limp mode--- but we have no clue how this relates to the esp...
I have stff and found something that mentioned about a wire harness or possible sensor replacement... Any idea how much this was?
Thanks in advance

my guy couldn't get me in until a week later when i made the original appointment, so now my car sits in his lot until he can work it in between appointments.... forced under carnel knowledge

THIS SUCKS
am i looking at thousands or hundreds of dollars to fix this?
Also, I changed my cd player recently. Its the alpine model audio 10 mf2199. Its a little bit small, so i used a single din mounting kit to mount it. Could this have thrown off the esp? Maybe a different speed volume interface or something?

Update on my situation, I talked to the mechanic today. He said the BAS switch code came up. I asked him about the wireharness, he said that unless the wire wrap was falling off I dont have a problem. He checked mine out because he knew of the problem, and said it was fine. However, your transmission code makes sense because when I first started the car the thing shifted really hard, it actually threw me back into my seat.

does anyone have info on what i should do? Replace the ESP control module? Or is it a sensor elsewhere?
I cleaned out the motor bay with compressed air, i might have knocked a wire loose. I will check it in the morning.
However, can anyone confirm that the control unit is the computer in the front with the metal lines running into the top? Theres a black flat storage area that at an up and down placement. Its marked, ESP.
Is this the control module as the code calls for above?
Your error codes and description closely matches what's on my invoice details. Fault code C1024 - CAN communication system with engine system is faulty.
just happened to me couple days ago - dealer replaced throttle actuator and updated software on ME control unit and TCM.
do you have a sprintbooster plugged in? i took mine out before sending the car in. going to leave it out for a while, car feels significantly better, as if i had a SB plugged in.
FYI, was told the actuator is about $700. labor took a while too - most of the day (no estimate since it's all covered under warranty).

i guess its the main control computer, because its going out intermitently, and as time progresses, less and less. I drove it once today for about a half of an hour, and nothing. I drove it in the rain today as well, which could have been a possible cause of failure, however, nothing happened!
I checked all of my wires in the floor, they are all snug and corrosion free, still smell new. I checked the wires to the brake pump in the engine bay, those are fine as well. I haven't checked the accelerator sensor, lateral/yaw sensor, or the steering wheel sensor yet. I do believe, that it would trip a code that would link specifically to each product; brakes, yaw, accelerator, steering, etc.
I'm at a lost moment with this car. I think my only option is to take it to a dealer and have them check it out, and then fix it myself. I dont want to buy unneeded items, and I'm not sure if my mechanic is going to fix it properly, since he stated there was no code present when he diagnosed it with his equipment. Still a chance the code was thrown after I brought the car home. Howeve, he had the car from friday until tuesday.
Yikes

If your mechanic doesn't have the STAR diagnostic system, you should find another mechanic. You can't read CANBUS with a 20 dollar OBD scanner.

Replacement of Pedal Value Sensor (B37)
"This campaign has been initiated because it has been determined that under certain operating conditions the pedal value sensor (b37) mau fail, causing the engine to run in "limp home" mode or the check engine MIL (A1e26) to illuminate in the instrument cluster. This requires the replacement of the pedal value sensor."
Where did i get this info? I found it on the ground after I saw a big mercedes truck go flying by.
Could this be my problem??
Sunman, please help.

It's 60 bucks, ++ = 75 total including 3-5 day shipping.
So, here's what it says about your error.
It's rather unclear, but since you mentioned your machanic and MAF, and
it's mentioned here with a possible connection, well that'd be the first thing I'd do. 1st rule in mechanical stuff; always go back to the last thing you did.
And what was the last thing before the problem happened?
MAF replacement.
If your mechanic is using parts that are one digit off,
there's yer sign. 1 digit might as well be 1 billion. It's the same thing.
Wrong part.
And never do too many things without testing each one, lest you
end up with a huge mess if it doesn't work when you get done, and you'll end up putting the old parts back in one by one till you figger out which thing you did wrong. Not related to your problem, except the going back to the last thing you did part.
I better not keep posting these things, lest I get in trouble with mercedes and the site.
Call 1800mercedes and order the DVD.
The thing is awesome.
