Q about ESP error message

We had an interesting phenomenon today. The following error appeared, blinking on and off a few times:

ELEC. STABIL. PROG.
VISIT WORKSHOP!
ESP

The error remained on until the car was stopped and turned off. Upon restarting the message was no longer there. Further, the "NO MALFUNCTION" message came up when scrolling through the screens.

Considering that we did not cancel the error by using the reset button, I would have expected this screen to show "1 MALFUNCTION".

Is this how it's supposed to work? Or am I misunderstanding this dense owner's manual?

Has anyone had a similar message? If so, what was the solution in your case?

The error apeared while motoring through town at 40 km/h in a straight line.

We've got to go to the dealer soon for a diagnostic and free car wash/vacuum.

It happened to me once. Picked up the car from the garage and, as I drove out, it seemed both rough and sluggish. A quick look at the display showed what you described. Turned it off and on. That was a month ago and it has not recurred.

There is a permanant fix for this...

the wiring harness needs to be replaced. I had this done last week. The part took 9 days to get but I got a C240 as a loaner while I waited. I've had the car a week since the replacement harness and no more malfunctions. It used to happen every day or so. Hope this helps you!

I've got the same message (ESP and BAS error) several times.
I went to the dealership and the already knew the problem because it's very very common among the C class. They order the parts and called me this afternoon to tell me they received them so I'm going to the workshop in the morning. Every time you stop and re-start the car the message goes away and that's normal bur you SHOULD go to the dealership to get it fixed. Nothing to worry about but it's not acceptable for us to see that kind of message.
Other people here reported a power decrease whenever they got the message (I never experienced that).
Hope this helps!

I had it too. It recurred after the first fix, and has been absent since the second fix. They replaced some sensors.
