theres been a lot of speculation goin on about K&N lately. And I must admit Im not thikning along the lines of Green/BMC filters. Cleaning isn't a problem to me. Its just havin to clean the MAF or even having to worry about cleaning it. You figure with buying a "lifetime" filter, eventually, your going to have to clean it, just like you would still have to change it if it were a stock A/F. so your "Change filter" process just changed to "Clean Filter". No biggie if you ask me. But again, considering green/bmc. prolly go with green anyways.

someone get me a HEPA from a Dyson!

Tks for the feedback guys.

Its weird that some cars are affected and some are not. I wonder what's up?

No offense to you Russell. Sincerely appreciate your experience & sharing.

I have now been using Green filters, and they are not an oil based filer. its is a full cotton filter and for the last 20,000K that i have been driving with the Greens i my gas economy has not changed much from the factory filter. I will try to find the full article on how the Green work. But what i do know is un-like the K&N the Green filters do need to be cleaned i think every 30,000K where the K&N does not need cleaning till like 100,000K.. the tests for K&N have shown that the dirtier the filter the better it works, that is why K&N add says that you wont need to replace you filter for the life of your car

"Russell Stevens" you should really try out the Green, i really like them. After i saw the in store display at the shop on how they work, i was truly impressed the test consist of:
they had a K&N filter display and a green filter display side by side so i could compare. and i know all of us here have seen these displays, where there is a filter and a fan behind the filter and when u turn on the fan the little ball in the tube floats to the top of the tube. Ok so the test that the sales man mad me do was put my hand over the K&N filter and see what happens to the ball, when i did that the air flow reduced and the ball in the tube dropped more then half way down, then he had me do the same thing with the Green and i was amazed that the ball never moved it stayed at the top the whole time.
Hi Harry,

Just read up on the Greenfilter USA website and its stated that their filters are pre-oiled.

Here's the link in pdf: http://www.greenfilterusa.com/images/page%201-5.pdf

Note Pg4 "DROP IT IN. FIRE IT UP." & Pg5 "COTTON".

when i picked up my filter, it did not feel like it had oil on it, when i pick up my last K&N for my old car u can touch the filter and ur hands became oily where when u touch the green there is nothing rubbing on ur hands. i'm going to be cleaning my filter soon so i'll let u know if and how much oil i need to apply. and when i take out my filter i will take a look at what Russell had mentioned and see if there is any oil build up.

Hi,

I might try the green air filters. I was just about to order K & Ns. I noticed that you are from Vancouver. Would you be kind enough to tell me where to get the green filters? Thanks.

Doesn't exist. Green Filter never made one for the m271, so I guess we'll drop the green filter discussion here.

Seriously....

I must be confused. Didn't you install some sort of oil catch mechanism to catch the oil coming off the crankcase, only to find the oil wasn't coming from the crankcase but from somewhere else?

K and N filter cost me $240 for a repair!

I installed a K and N filter a year ago and it started running rough after about a month. I brought it into a dealer (Smythe on Stevens Creek in San Jose, CA) and they charged me $240 to clean the MAF and change the filters since it voided the warranty.

I was surfing today and saw this site info. I just called K and N...they were really nice and got my info. A warranty claim was filed so I hope I get some money back??? I doubt it but you never know.

I'll let you all know if I ever get some money back!!

I'm guessing the most (if anything) you'll get back is the cost of the filter. If you think about how oil prepped filters work you wouldn't put one in your car. The filtration relies on a coating of oil on the foam to catch the small particles. No oil, no fine filtration. For those of you who do not see a film in your intake track from one of these filters it means you don't have enough oil on it. The intake action constantly works to suck the oil off of the filter and the part of the filter that is closest to the intake tracks loses it first. Try this test the next time you clean and re-oil your filter.....when you think it's ready to go in the car take an air hose and blow a stream of air through the filter with a paper towel on the other side. It won't take long for oil to start showing up. Now imagine 4, 6, or 8 cylinders constantly sucking air through that filter. These type of filters worked fine before MAFs were introduced because there wasn't anything to get contaminated with the small amount of oil being passed to the engine. I'm no expert but you don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure out the consequences of putting oil in your intake track before the MAF. That's what the filter is supposed to stop!

Man this is so crazy. Too many things ive heard that it can damage your MAF but and yet people still use it without any negative effects.

I guess im still not going to take the risk...

Cause and effect

It was obvious of the source, since it was directly in the airbox.
The intake is connnected to the IC and associated piping, so they were a mess too.
The sticky oil clogged the small hose that attaches to the crankcase breather hose and flooded the intake system with oil.
Perhaps a normally aspirated engine wouldn't have these issues.
Also there's a valve that has to open on startup to let the charged air in,
and it was stuck closed also due to the sticky oil. They gave me a new valve. Free. How sweet! Thats the one directly next to the air filter on the 2002.

So, yeh, maybe the filter didn't "cause" it, but the "effect" was a problem.
The website say "Oil does not come off K&N Filters."
So, for those of you considering removing your sensor, please check to see if there's oil. If there is you'll know KN is full of it.
They also said they soaked MAF's in KN oil and had no ill effect....

A paper filter costs 10 bucks, and last 20-30K miles.
I will likely need 5 total ever.

I'd like to believe KN...I found the PN for the 2002...and it is like 14 bucks.
But will it get me any more power?

I want to know what those of you with KN now, find when you remove it.
Did the oil come off? Is it everywhere?
If not, hell maybe I'll try one.

Not.

where are you getting the paper filter for $10? I've gone to BHBenz and DTLAMotors and they both want around $50...

I know I've seen them cheaper, but rockauto.com has them for 13.
I bought coil packs from them. Like 30 each. They seem like an OK company.
They have WIX oil filters for 6 bucks too.

Oh, this is 2002.

thats a pretty strong promise by K&N.......

Pledge Details
K&N warrants that a properly installed and maintained K&N product will not cause harm to any engine component and will not result in a warranty denial. We will promptly reimburse the consumer for the cost of the repair if a dealership denies warranty coverage as a result of a K&N product. In order to receive reimbursement, a consumer must provide the following:

A written statement or repair order from the dealership in which the dealership blames the problem or warranty denial on a K&N product.

A written request to the dealership to send the broken part directly to K&N at K&N’s expense. We will need the evidence.

Your cooperation in helping us pursue our claim for reimbursement from the dealership.

K&N will then contact the dealership and insist they present evidence to support their allegation or reimburse K&N for the cost of the repair. We strive to exceed consumer expectations.
Popped a K&N filter in the wifeys Accord a couple months back, think i'll take a look at at it this weekend!
