Question Sub Question???

I want to install a sub. I allready have the sub and the amp. The amp is the alpine v12, and the sub is the JL W7 12 inch.

Since i think the bose system is good, all it needs is alittle thump.

So my question is. Cant it be installed?

i saw in a members signature he had a sub and a amp installed.

What do i need some kind of convertor please help

thanks for any info

nope I didnt use a converter at all...

Are you gonna do the install your self?

I ended up tapping into the existing subwoofer. and it sounds fine. I never got around to tapping into any other lines.

A question to the electrically minded at the end of the day...

If you have a wire feeding 2.8Ohm and you tap that wire and hook a 4Ohm or worse 8Ohm load what happens to the resistance across the feed wire?

Is it feeding 10Ohm? And if so, are you cooking your amp?

Theoretically if you can't unhook the crappy Bose speaker and hook up a real 4 or 8 ohm speaker because you'll damage something - or start a fire... then this is worse because you're adding to the load?!

Please someone mathematically inclined, figure it out. I want to play this game as well but have "the fear."

i had to get a High Low converter for mine. I had a shop install it for me but they hooked everything up threw the dash and battery and to the trunk. I dont have the bose system though. but i think with the stock Headunit u will need the High low converter.

also if u just want a little thump i think that W7 will be to much. :p

Peet the amp does not feed a certain resistance, it is just speced at said resistance. If the resistance is higher, ie a 4 Ohm woofer, you would get less power to the woofer and the amp would not work as hard. So it will in turn run the amp cooler. Now if you had a 2 Ohm woofer, which they do not make on the aftermarket, you would then run the amp hotter. I would look for a JL W6 series they had 6 ohm voice coils, two of them, and when you run them in parralel theywould create a 3 Ohm load. Which would give you the most power to the amp, but a 4 Ohm should do just fina as well. And I am an EE and have worked in the car audio business for a few years while looking for the IT position I have now, just in case you are wondering how I know this crap. I was thinking of doing the same when I get my coupe, if I ever get it that is. Damn house payment wnet up $200 a month and screwed my finances up. Oh well, should know if I get the new job within a few weeks. Wich me luck guys so I can finally buy my coupe and have cash left over....
