You could put as low profile tire as you'd like but...what for? What kind of looks are you after? To see a short or small sidewall on a tire? Performance and handling will not be improving so...IMHO...I wouldn't do it. The wheelwell would look so empty.....
The speedometer....That's a whole other ballgame. Yes....the spedometers are calibrated to a specific (height of tire)circumference and engineered upon the specifics of the car. If you go smaller, you will notice a difference (small difference or big) as well as if you go bigger. The trick is to install bigger wheels (at least for me) and try to maintain the same circumsference (or as close to) as factory.
Just my $.02... No offense. To each...their own!

Stock 245/45-17 is considered a low profile tire. You can try to go wider (what I'm doing) and go with at 245/40-17 on stock 17x7.5 wheels, but most shops will tell you that this is dis-advantageous because of the sidewall deflection of a 245 mm wide tire (9.65 inches) being shoe-horned onto a 7.5" rim. Others (Nukblazi) will tell you it's just fine. I'm leaning toward the "it's just fine" camp and will be trying it out. I'll be mounting 245/40-17 BFG G-Force KDW NT (formerly known as KDW2) as soon as Shoreline Motoring (my local Tire Rack recommended tire shop) receives them.
