'02 C240 Engine failure

My engine just shut itself off just now. I was waiting at a traffic light when the engine suddenly shut down. I tried to restart it a few times and it couldn't start. I called Mercedes roadside assistance and they said they couldn't do anything. I was in the middle of traffic and there was a long queue behind me. They told me to call the police and so I did. However, the police couldn't find me for at least 25 min. After that, I tried to start the engine again and luckily it started. This time, the "check engine" lighted up. Anybody know what has happened?
