Wiring rear cigarette/12V lighter and annoying open rear ashtray

Can someone tell me if there is a way to avoid leaving the rear ashtry open but keep the rear cigarette lighter plugged in so i can keep the ipod in my glove compartment.

Right now, the way i have it, the ipod is plugged into a 12V extension cord that is routed to the rear cig lighter. But I can't close the ashtry and people kick it and may eventually break it.

I have attached a picture.

Thanks for any help.

I followed the following post (https://mbworld.org/forums/showthrea...arette+lighter) to run power to my satellite radio.

The only thing I had to buy was a cigarette lighter adapter to put into the center console. Just look at the pictures for "tap into the center console and inside." Works really good and easy to do

Thanks for the link.

Sorry if this is a stupid question but how do you "Tap" in to the rear cigarette lighter? Did you cut the old wire and then resolder both? Or did you just use electrical tape over the currect connection?

Just trying to figure out a safe way to do it but don't want to cut the existing wire unless i really have to.

i cut it and crimped the wires with butt splices, basically adding another cigarette lighter in the center console. That way if you still need the rear one for something it is there.

You could use electrical tape, but is really not the best way to keep the connection and you have a chance for it to come undone down the road.
