VIN numbers
Ok, I found the link for the VIN code identifier. It doesn't give a lot of info.
Doesn't a VIN # tell a lot more; i.e. options besides engine, built data?
Somebody please educate me and if possible post a link that is full featured.
Thanx

yes the vin tells
year
make
model
engine
options( tranny type etc.)
country of origin
production number
the vin also contains a check digit which, when all the numbers and letters are run through a mathematical equation will = the check digit.
also most all vin plates are help on with a special type of rivet called a rossier(sp?) rivot. these rivots are, well should be only sold to auto manufacturers.
i will post more data when i go home, i do not have it all in front of me.

An example of a VIN for a coupe: WDBRN47J82A203xxx
The first two alpha-numeric positions are for country of origin. Germany is WA thru W0 (Wzero) are for Germany. North Amercian codes start with numbers from 1 to 5. VIN's for ML's should start with a 1, 4 or 5. WD is Germany.
The second and third positions indentify the manufacturer. DB is DaimlerChrysler and is obviously derived from the pre-merger name, Daimler Benz.
Positions 4 thru 8 describe the car. The "RN47" in the example means the car is a CL203, specifically a C230k. A C240 would be "RF61", a C320 is "RF64", a C32 AMG is "RF65" and a C320 Wagon is "RH64". The last position in this group should refer to the transmission. My source lists only codes for cars imported into the US. C200k should be "RN4?".
Position 9 is the check digit. In the example, it is 8
The tenth position is the year. 2 means the car is a 2002.
The next position is the factory identifier. A is Sindelfingen.
The rest of the VIN is the serial number.
So, the VIN does not give any information about options except the transmission.
