Stock Air box structure.

Does anyone what are the 2 hoses that attached to the upper part (directly above the supercharge) of the stock air box. One of the hose is attached to the crankcase, the other hose goes inside the engine. I know the purpose of the hose that attached to the crankcase, but the other one I have no idea when it attach to and what is the purpose of it.

I believe they are both part of the emissions control system.

Eason, how is your cone filter working out? Do you have anything holding it on there except for the hose clamp? I bought the cone filter and put it on yesterday. I drove for about 30 miles and it worked good. I thought I had it on there tight enough, but then I guess I hit a bump and it fell off. I didn't know it until the temperature got up to 100C and I got a coolant warning on the malfunction screen. I think maybe the filter had stopped the fan or something. I had wire ties on it to keep it from falling into the fan if it came off, but I guess it didn't work how I expected.

Well, luckily I was about .2 miles from home when it happened and I got home and shut it off. I put the airbox back in today and everything works fine, so at least I didn't break anything.

I don't think I will use it again unless I have a good way of holding it on there. The clamp seems to slide off the tighter you put it on. But anyway, how is yours working and do you have anything keeping it on?

Just get the K&N panel filter for now. K&N called me last week and wants to borrow my car to do a FIPK kit (what they call their cold air intake kit) and I said yes. That will be designed and tested by K&N on a dyno and that's probably your best bet for cost and power although it may take a few months.

I probably won't do anything until they develop the FIPK. I already wasted $30 on the cone, and the panel is even more than that, so I'll wait. It sure sounded good though. If you like the supercharger whine, it gets pretty high pitched from about 3000 rpm and on up. I don't know what, if any, blowoff valve this car has, but I could hear a bit of a hiss when I let off the gas. The engine also seemed to run a bit cooler probably because of the open space behind the radiator. That is of course until I dropped the filter and almost overheated it.

But I still want to know how yours is working eason.

Its pretty cool that you do all this stuff to your car that helps out the rest of the group. Thanks.

Have you noticed anything in the Buttdyno since you put the K&N on?

BTW, what kind of Buell do you have? Ive got a Harley Road King, but have driven numerous Buells over the years, great bikes!

Mine works fine, since the cone is not very big, the hose clamp did it's job. I went thru many bumpy roads, big and tight turns and speed up to 180km/h, the filter just sits there nicely. I guess you didn't tight your hose clamp very well, or the flange didn't slip on completely. There is a built in bypass valve in our system, I am still doing some research on it, then I will start making my own prototype again.

Anyone of you notice the 2 small hoses attached to the upper air box? I want to make another intake setup the can seperate the bypass valve. Since the hot air release by the supercharge bypass valveis is going back to the intake system; therefore, I want to make a setup that can let the bypass valve to release the hot air to the atmosphere.

Eason, take a look at the pre '00.5 SLK set up...

I want to make another intake setup the can seperate the bypass valve. Since the hot air release by the supercharge bypass valveis is going back to the intake system; therefore, I want to make a setup that can let the bypass valve to release the hot air to the atmosphere.

hey Matt, how much time do we get until the engine boils over after the first Temp warning shows up?

this goes back to past discussions on how the Temp gauge should be a primary display... I just dont want to not see it coming.

I don't know too much about this. I guess it depends on how hot it must be to cause damage. And I don't know this number, certainly not in celsius. I guess the warning came up at 100C, because that is what I posted previously. I'm sure someone knows at what temperature it begins to get dangerous. But that person is not me.

What is the model number that we need to use when we use the application guide on the K&N site? It seems that they list all models internationally, and the cars list isn't very descriptive. The closest one I could find was the C230CGI, was that right?

No that is not correct. For a drop in panel filter for the 2002 Coupe, the K&N part number is 33-2193.
