C230 Coupe display problem

My C Coupe display keeps going out. The display illuminates and says display error visit workshop. When it goes out the speedometer goes out too. When I restart my car it will work again but only for a minute or so then it goes out again. Any clue as to what part I need to correct this problem? I can deal with the display not working but not having a speedometer bothers me.

Thanks!

There are know issues with the display. Mostly pixelating at high interior temps. The dealers will simply replace them.

Are you still under warranty?

No, my C Coupe is a 2002 so I am not under warranty. Do you have a rough idea of the replacement cost? Thanks

My display works when I start my car then about 2 minutes into the drive I get the error code. Would resetting the code possibly work? if so, how do I go about resetting it? Thanks!

You could either buy a code scanner for about $100-120, plug it into the OBD port, and reset it yourself, or go to Autozone and they'll do it for you for free. Though I'd doubt that it would fix the problem.

In a 5-minute call, you could get your local dealer's estimate of what fixing it and resetting everything would cost you. Assuming it's the display and not any wiring issues, it's an easy installation. Any reason why you haven't talked to your local dealer to get a ballpark?

The benz parts department quoted me ~1400 for a new cluster a few months ago

Had display pixels go out on another Mercedes-Benz vehicle (2002 E320). My suggestion, get them replaced under Warranty on the first time they go out. Otherwise, it's about $1000 for the part and $500 for the labor (they have to take quite a bit of the front dash apart).

Seems like your instrument cluster is having problems. I have a digital speedometer, if you have one, can you read the digital speedometer if not the analogue speedometer? All other gauges work hopefully (gasoline and tachometer gauge).

Display

The strange thing about my display is that the pixels are fine. When it goes out the analogue speedometer goes too. The gas gauge seems to work but could be a bit questionable. I have not been to the dealer yet due to lack of time. I work 10 hour days on the BMW assembly line and go to school full time. If I am unable to reset the display I plan to visit the dealership. Thanks!

Are you sure about that? Physically swapping clusters takes less than ten minutes. The only thing that takes some time is the programming.

I've got almost 93k and I'm still on my original one. Though when it's really hot (92 or so and above), you can't read the top 1/2" and bottom 1/2" of the display.

Tommy and midnight, the problem I've had with my display is just as midnight described and I've read about here, where the outer edge of the diplay fades out when it is warm/hot outside. Where I live, it get over 100F pretty much every day for ~3 months, and it will reach 110F+ at least a few days each summer month. It was pretty easy for the dealer in Bakersfield to see, because I took it in during the summer. Not a problem with the new display. Glad I had that one done under warranty. It probably is only an issue if you live where it gets hot durring the summer months. Not sure on the cutting out - that sounds like an electrical connection thing to me, like maybe the connector is loose or something.

Haha! Yes, everyone at BMW gives me a hard time about driving a Mercedes. I love my car though.

i have the same problem...well i've had a lot of problems with my car. that's why i'm coming to this forum, everyone seems pretty helpful. im 21 & on a tight budget right now. i could list off problems but it really bugs me that my display is pretty much un-readable during half the year.

Wrong! Not on an '02 C-coupe. You need 2 hooks and ten minutes and don't hit the key wth the cluster out or you will get errors that the dealer will need to reset.

I remember the service advisor saying that the bill to be sent to corporate would be about $1500 USD for the part and labor.

Please keep in mind that this is a 2002 E320 and it's possible that this one takes a longer time to disassemble than our C-Class vehicles.

I'm having the same problem with my car that you guys seem to have. The display does some crazy things when its gets hot in the car. My question is: if I buy a new or used cluster and install it myself will the odometer miles transfer from the car to the new cluster?

C230 and SL500
I obtained a 2003 C230 in Oct 2018. The display was dark. My husband purchased an LED display from German Audio Tech on Amazon Marketplace online, removed the dash and replaced the bad one. It cost 149.95 but is worth the money. I felt unsafe driving and not knowing the status of the car.
