AC colder in non-Auto mode?

I noticed recently that the driver side vents (05 model) are not as cold as the right side when in "auto" mode only. This is with the temperature set to 70 degrees on both side. In this mode, it should blow at the lowest temp when the cabin temp is high and gradually lower the blower speed as the cabin gets cooler. Is this how it should work?

But when I have the temp set to the lowest and in "manual mode". the vent is much colder from start.

Trying to figure out if AC has a problem or if the Mercedes AC just sucks. In comparision, my wife's X5 AC is much stronger and adjusts more effectively in "auto" mode.
