the original inquiree had scanned and posted the specs from HIS owners manual. He clearly has a 2.0 liter motor and the car is denoted as kompressor, obviously supercharged. it doesn't matter what some of us here think what mercedes made, the car is what the car is.
to try to answer his question, it sounds like something coming out of the tranny or driveline, as the clicking become more rapid as the car goes faster.
drex is right get a mechanic to go with you so he can diagnose where the sound is coming from.
also check the lugs, one or a couple of them might just be loosed, that could also make the clicking noise.
goodluck.

C200K (w204)
check for loose e wire, it happens to my car few years back, driving me nuts, and the sounds get louder as i turn right. Apparently the cable touch the driveshaft or something, well i'm not happy to say that the problem has come back again.

Okay, just so that EVERYBODY is clear, there is no such thing as a C200 2.0 liter supercharged engine. ALL the M271 engines are 1.8L. I just don't want people walking around thinking they have something 10x's more unique than anything else.
The C200K and C230K are using the same m271 engine, which is in fact a 1.8L Supercharged car. The reason the c230K (2003-2005) has more power is due to the different superchargers and slightly different internals.

drex, look at the spec sheet he posted, see where it says displacement (1998), that's it. mercedes won't say 1.998 liter that's why it's a 2.0
