I'd love to see if anyone could show that quality and price of parts is different on different versions of the same engine.

Kleeman solves that problem with software upgrade...and likely fuel mileage loss.
There is a difference between the kompressor engines and I will start with compression ratios:

C180 9.5:1
C200 8.5:1
C230 8.7:1

My gas sipping C-Class
Going back to the comment from a 20 year tech, saying that MB has had issues with this ehgine:
Besides what's already been said, I have 110,000+ miles on my Kompressor and it runs as good, if not better than it did when I bought it new. I have only had issues with my A/C compressor and it's safety sprocket (It continues to break)......Other than that, I drive my cars fairly hard, without abusing them. I still have the factory clutch and I have launched this car quite a few times....NO oil leaks with very acceptable oil consumption (1 qt per 12K miles)
I think it's a strong motor for what it has to move and it definitely helps to have the a little more balance with the 200lbs of "V-6" weight, not up in the front...

I would like some more power and I've given some thought to buying Kleeman's header and other mods, but the bang for your buck just doesn't make sense...

GREAT ENGINE though and I've driven the c240 as well as the 06 C230 V6 and still think my little 4cyl is nicer.

I always thought MB stopped selling the 1.8 in the US was because its only LEV and the 2.5 is a ULEV.

I know I prefer my M271 and I also got the last year for Black Opal on a C.

It's amazing how good questions go unanswered but stupid questions, like this
garner so much attention.
De-evolutionary

But then I am guilty as well for being masterly baited....

Quite odd that the slower engine has a higher compression ratio?
But then Europe has higher octane gas than we do...
but higher compression for LESS power?

WTF?

Lower compression allows more boost without detonation.

For Boost: C230>C200>C180

I agree on your logic but why would the C230 have more compression than the C200? I understand the amount of boost but would have thought that the C230 would be even less like 8.2:1

Here in the states, the coupe was gone after 2005, as was the
I4 1.8L. So, in the UK, the C230 coupe is still an M271?
Interesting, here in the states they went to a V6 as C230.

That is weird because on www.Mercedes.co.uk they list the models of the coupe as a:
C180 Komp
C200 Komp
C230 V6
C350
C200CDI
C220CDI

The Mercedes UK website shows the V6 to be available, but I can't imagine there would be much demand for it. The fuel consumption shows to be substantially higher, but the performance is not much better than the 4-cylinder engine. It seems the C200K would be the model of choice for most people wanting a gasoline (petrol) engine.

I drove a 2007 C230 V6, and it was very nice. Unfortunately, I still preferred my 2005 4-cylinder C230K. The power was more immediate on acceleration, and it just felt better to drive. Add to that about 3 mpg better fuel economy, and the 4-cylinder makes better since for me.
