for those who want a new headunit to replace the stock MB ones, here is something new that Alpine came out with that still enables you to use Speed-Control and steering wheel controls...Very neat, it shows it installed on a new C-Class...

It has to be installed using a special ignition removal tool ...typical! That will add another $500+ to get it installed at MB.

All cars have it...even the non-bose cars. Except the Bose-systems vary the volume using a sensor while the non-bose simply varies the volume depending on the speed you are going.

I thought you could turn of the bose audio pilot at the dealer? Aren't you also able to adjust the 'gain'?

Ive got the BOSE system, I like it actually. Its nice not having to reach for the volume when you slow down or stop with the windows and roof open. The unit could use some more Bass, but that's only a subwoofer away and after putting in the 6 disc, the CD's definately have more bass than the cassette or radio did.

Those of us with Bose have two volume adjusting items. One is the speed sensitive volume. It has four settings 0, -3, -6, and -9. 0 is off. The diagnostic domputer can be used to change the settings. The second is the Bose AudioPilot digital processing which helps compensate for unwanted ambient noise with no perceived change in audio volume.

I don't have any exact instructions. Have the tech read the service manual on how to adjust the speed sensitive volume controls.

Think mine was never turn on and that's the way I like it. First thought it did not work, but reading the forums you can have it turn off, like mine.

Looking at the pic of the Alpine, it looks like they have to remove the button console directly above the stock headunit. How does that work?

At first I thought that was a unit with a retractable screen, but it certainly isn't. I wouldn't want to have the buttons removed. I would rather have this setup:

I think the MSRP for the headunit and the nav unit is about $3600. Street price should be quite a bit less.

Do the stereo dealers know how to integrate an aftermarket Alpine to the steering wheel controls? I called a couple of them up and nobody knew how to do it.

Just called up a local dealer. The guy knows about the adaptor and told me it won't be available in the states at least for another month or two.
