How to test headlight auto leveling function?

Hi all,

I got this 2006 W203 with original Bi-xenon option. I am suspecting the auto-leveling is not functioning correctly. Will appreciate you could advise me on how to test it out.

Thanks.

Just park your car towards a wall. Then, at night preferably, turn on your lights. Before the BI-xenons fire up, the city lights will light up the wall ahead of you. And while they're lit up you'll be able to see the light beam move up and down. At this time, the bi-xenons will fire up, and depending on how quick they fire up, you may also see the bi-xenons light beam move as well.

Or, you can just have someone start the car for you while you're looking at the lights. As soon as they come on, you can see the projector part of the light assembly move up and down.

Very cool to see, and it always make for a good crowd pleaser.

Park your car towards a wall. While your engine is off, turn your headlights all the way to the on position. Then turn your car on. You will see your headlights dip, then return to thier normal height.

when I am shifting my M6 I can see them constantly adjusting. When I turn the car on, they start off level, dip down then adjust back up to level.

Good luck

headlight auto-leveling inoperative

Ok, I have run the test according to the suggestions and found the auto-leveling is not functional at all. I remember this abnormality started to appears since the dealer done a ECU reset.

I am suspecting that the dealer could have incorrectly re-cycled the battery power to reset the ECU, and in the process, damaged one of the SAM's.

My queston is:

Is the auto-leveling control by one of SAM's? If it is, which one?

Everything on my car is functoning correctly except headlight auto-leveling. Will it possibly be the result of a partially failed SAM?

Do my car equipped with SAM at all?

Will appreciate your advice.

When the dealer installed OEM bixenon for my car, they said the auto leveling is not working.
But when I start the car, the headlight will dip and turn back to normal position like everyone else.
I think my hi beam is still the H7 halogen though.
When I ask the dealer to show me how they work, he showed me the E63's bixenon changes angle for high beam and the high beam light will also turn on.
What's that suppose to mean? I am still confused about xenon and bixenon...

My '02 coupe's manual says it only works if the headlight switch is in the "auto" position.

The way bi-xenon's work is as follows:

Xenon light only is used for low-beams. For high beams they use a regular halogen AND the reflector in the lense of the bi-xenon turns upwards allowing more light to come out. So high beams use xenon and halogen light.

By the way, you were able to get your dealer to install them???

I see, but how come I never see my xenon change angle when I turn on the high beam? Only my high beam halogen turns on. To answer your question, yes I got it installed at the dealer and they charged normal labor fees. However, they forgot to change the setting to xenon present so I had to go back again to get the setting correct for free.

even if you install oem bix, they will not autolevel like cars that came from the factory with bix. there are sensors that have to be installed for the whole system to work.

Thanks! I love the C350 M6. This is all I have for now, I do need to take some pictures sometime though. This may make it worse, but I am going to see Sunil in a few weeks to get a bunch of mods.

Can you tell us if you have the factory headlight washers? I guess that *might* determine whether it came with factory Bi-X or if it was installed aftermarket.

Yes, they came with headlight washers, and I do not recommend anyone using it on a fine and dry day because they spray water and foam all over the hood.
The auto-leveling did worked perfectly before the dealer reset the ECU.
