A simple question

Guys,
I just got my W203 2 weeks ago, but I didn't get any manual with it, my question is "What's that button labeled W/S next the stick shift?"
I know it sounds kind of stupid but ,help me out here

If you have W and S on the shifter, your particular year's tranny had 2 settings: Winter and Standard. The winter setting starts the car in second gear (less wheel spin) and the shift points are lower. Standard is just that. All 5 gears are used and it will shift at more aggressive rpm's.

Here is a suggestion for your owner's manual: log onto Mercedes Owners Online (via MBUSA) and register. Once you do, you can download a PDF of your manual, for free. I did this even though I had a hard copy. It is easy.

The manual also recommends that this button sould be only pushed with transmission in "Park" to avoid strange function of transmission. Good luck with your new purchase.

Not a stupid question, since MB does some strange things. Later models were changed to the S & C, for sport and comfort. I guess MB felt that sounded better than "winter and standard". C is the same as W. S is S.

Now if you just just had one labeled W/C, you would not need to stop on long trips.

A little more info for you ...

'W' mode starts the car in 2nd gear, so the tires don't slip as much in a 'winter' environment. It also does some other useful things, such as hold the car stationary on an incline (if you're pointing uphill) with no foot on the brake/gas. It also couples the car more tightly to the transmission.

'S' mode uses all gears, and won't hold the car stationary on a hill; but I've found I get better gas mileage in 'S' mode and that you can coast to stop signs/lights from a lot further away in 'S' mode than in 'W' mode.

W/C feature is unfortunately not labeled. To use this feature, you must:
1. Park you car clear of the roadway and set the parking brake.
2. Wait for traffic (if any) to clear.
3. Exit the driver's door.
4. Walk around to the right rear corner of your car.
5. Use the W/C feature.
6. Briefly survey your surroundings to make sure nobody is watching.
7. Exit the area.

Additional hint: it is best to use the W/C feature in sparsely populated areas.

WC ... I think you would say #1 or #2 like when you leave the classroom.

As for C/S I think it is for comfort versus standard. Comfort starts smoothly with 2nd gear and shifts early (same as Winter). Comfort sounds more "classy" than winter (marketing with whissle words).

Moviela said you don't need to stop anymore. that means MB manage to include it in the seat... I wonder if they thought about the odor spray. LOL

OK sorry, this was my lame attempt at humor. W/C is the abbreviation used in some places for Water Closet. It is not used that much in the US anymore.
