Service B question - K&N voids warranty???
Service B question - K&N voids warranty???
Merry Christmas to All!
I have a Service B scheduled for my car this Saturday. The car is a CPO with warranty till December 08. The only thing that affects performance if that is a K&N air filter that I got installed.
Should I take it off before service B and replace it with a stock filter? Or should I just ask them not to change the filter at all?
By the way, to everyone interested, the cheapest Service B in NYC area is at Helms Brothers Mercedes in Flushing, Queens.
They quoted me $295 for the service
Thanks

Two thoughts:
1. Don't confuse actually voiding the warranty with the dealer's view as to whether the warranty is void. As a practical matter, if the dealer takes the view that the warranty is voided, even if they are not correct you are SOL w/r/t that dealer. And most dealers will take the same view and not like aftermarket parts that have the ability to cause them headaches.
2. Remove the K&N. K&N filters work by having the oil do most of the filtration. Excessive oiling by the owner, which has been known to happen, can cause the oil to go upstream in the intake and foul the MAF sensor.
K&N filters are a waste of time, IMHO. I've never seen any independently documented verified horsepower gains from an airfilter on a well engineered car like a Benz or a BMW. Mercedes Benz knows how to make a very free flowing intake, and a new filter, by itself, will not provide any additional power. It can, however, foul the MAF if oiled excessively, or if not oiled enough can allow excessive dirt into the motor. As to cost, how often do you do a B service, every 20k miles? How much is the genuine Mercedes filter? Maybe $15? What savings are we talking about here, if that's the argument for one.
Reinstall the Mercedes filter and save yourself alot of potential aggravation.
