Question...

If our Cam Sensors haven't leaked yet, could we use some epoxy or something like that to cover the existing sensors so they don't leak?

epoxy will do you no good if the oil is running INSIDE the wires---you would have to put that jumper in and epoxy the inside of the male plug on the cam sensor itself if anything (maybe jbweld--very thin layer?? I prefer to check it often and buy the updated and fixed part---

Thanks everyone

So as a result of this thread I have the recall for the $12 hose done by the dealer.

I went ahead and bought the patch cables for the sensors on my own dime as the car did not have the leak yet. Now I have those installed as insurance against future leaks and will monitor the cam sensors.

My cam sensors are just starting to leak. I've ordered a new set and should have them in the next day or so. I'll swap them out myself.

I searched the forum but I can't seem to find the torque specs for the bolts that attach the sensors. Anyone happen to have the specs?

Lesson Learned - DIYer's sign up for the free EPC C230 sport coupe has been posting about!!! I signed up after I ordered the parts, like a dummy ...

Ordered the cam sensors and isolating wires as per this thread, only to realize after I got them today that you need (want) to order the expansion plugs (A 271 051 00 32) and seal rings (A 010 997 23 48 - these are what HeirKranz was wanting a part # for) too. The sensor (magnet - A 271 051 01 77) itself comes with a hole in the middle, where the expansion plug goes.

The STAR service manual does not mention using any sealants, so I guess just the seal ring is used for sealing ... I like to do things correct the first time, and don't like to re-use 5 year old/50K+ mile rubber parts (and if you're servicing yourself, the money you're saving easily pays for the little stuff like this).

Just thought I'd give everyone a heads up, and post the part #'s.

The bolt torque is 8 Nm. New bolts (M6X16) are part # N 910142 006001.

I know this thread is a little stale but this might help you guys still dealing with this problem. I have 2002 C230K with the M111 engine.

I know for a fact that I did replace mine twice now. first one failed in two weeks. Got it replaced under ( PARTS ) warranty. I also noticed the old one that failed did not have gasket or sealing plastic ring inside the sensor. Also the one that i purchased first that failed also did not have plastic sealing ring inside. The second one replaced under warranty DID have a plastic sealing ring inside of it, and as of now 8 month after doing to work still have no leaks.

EDIT: also for the post up there that has a pic of the magnet, no seal just black RTV but lightly so it does not spill inside the cover or out side the motor.

Is this another area of concern for oil leakage? Or just the result of
the leakage from the cam sensor? What's the function of this part?

From what I heard that this part detects cam position for intake valve timing on the M111 and intake and exhaust valve timing on the M271.

For other places to look for leaking (as I am only familiar with the 2.3L) is also the oil cap after a while the springs inside gets tired, and the seal starts to let oil out of the cover on engines with 75K + on them, also look at the overlooked seal in the oil level sending unit, and also oil in the intake ( I have not solved this one yet for the life of me, still burning 2 quarts of oil in 8K miles).

Thats all i can think of now. More technically experienced will chime in or flame me but thats ok. Knowledge is power.

Okay, I have the car at the dealership getting Service B done. My CAM sensors are not leaking. I'm having the wires put on as insurance. I assume that I don't need the cam sensors replaced since they aren't leaking. Can someone confirm this?

Interestingly my dealership service advisor had never heard of this issue. After he looked up the TSB, he said my car isn't affected. I'm told them to put the wires on anyway. After the work was done, I looked under my hood and saw that they only put on 1 wire. I went back into the dealership and told them what I found. They ordered the second wire and I have to bring the car back. Kind of annoying but in general, I'm happy with the dealership.

just wondering.. the two metal rings that hold the cam sensor cover together.. if the wiring harness adapter is touching that... is that too hot for the adapter to touch? will it melt? or does that thing not get even close to hot enough to melt??

I have oil at that connector I mentioned in the valve cover....
hmmm....douch it with contact cleaner and check it regularly I guess.

So I took the car to the dealer ship on Saturday, partly because my right tail lamp mysteriously went out and partly because of this thread. I know the SA there so I told him straight up no oil but asked if they would check the cam sensors anyways.

Good news first: There is a campaign to upgrade all bulbs, had all my bulbs replaced to "long lasting extended use" bulbs...whatever that means. All I care is my right rear tail lamp works again so no more worry bout mr. po po pulling me over.

Bad news: The cam sensor wire extension was not performed as no evidence of leakage was found (I wish they would have just done it anyways!)

Good/Bad news: Tranny was leaking. Replaced all sorts of seals, rings, etc. Also replaced parking detent attached to rear cross-member support and hydraulic something or other (don't have my invoice with me and can't quite remember). Good news is they fixed it all for free under warranty, bad news is it happened in the first place.

Anyone else have a tranny leak on them?

^ yeah, my tranny leak was fixed under warranty. They said it was a slow weep so I probably wouldn't have noticed anyways.

My father and I added the wire extensions to the cam sensors on May 17th, 2008 at 33,616 miles, and found NO OIL in the stock connections.

I replaced my sensor a few weeks ago and I don't remember seaing a seal on either the old or the new part. I suppose I should check again and see if any oil is leaking between the sensor and the head.

Is there supposed to be a seal or no?

I goofed up the metal cylinder piece when reinstalling it on the end of the cam shaft too. Luckily, I think I caught it before doing too much damage.

since you have a m111 do you have the extension cable (one starter line) part # for the sensor. Also where did you order it from and how much.
