Around where I live, most dealers won't even give you anywhere near KBB trade-in value. My guess is that if you walk into a non MB dealer and trade the car in So Cal, you would probably get closer to $12K. All I know is when I sold my 2002 C230 3 1/2 years ago, most cars where in the auto trader for 19-22K yet the best I could get after months of auto trader, cars.com and putting it at a local weekly college cars for sale lot is $15.9K and my car was very clean and still under warranty. The dealer said at most he can get me $12K and I've known the guy for a while, KBB trade in was about $13.5k. So yes, I believe he did get a good deal, but nothing that is shocking. What happens with many dealers is they get an aging report that shows how long cars sat on the lot. Then they reprice cars that are older than a certain amount until it's sold. It has to do more with financing flooring than anything else. I've seen nice cars sit on lots for 90 days and then sold for great prices. You never know why a car sat on the lot for so long, maybe they had too many of the same thing, maybe it has odd options or color that don't sell well in that region, maybe it's a smell thing, maybe it was just hidden at the back of the lot, you never know.

When I sold my 2003 C230 two years ago with sim mileage, it went for 18K. Carmax offered me 15 and MB offered 12K Car was a 6sp with nav w/ Remus exhaust and H&R lowered suspension. YOu got a pretty good deal

I'm guessing it's because he was that c230_617 guy. While looking at that page he linked to his zip was still in there and it's in Mattapan (an area around Boston with a 617 area code). Furthermore, he was posting pictures of c230_617's old coupe and saying how hot and sick it was. Lastly, he was on the Jaguar forums saying how much he hates his Jag and is going back to Mercedes.

Just a guess though.
