OBD-II reader issues

I have tried 2 OBD-II readers for a laptop and cannot get either to connect. Has anyone had success getting an OBD-II reader connected to their cars?

Where are you trying to connect the reader to?

OK here are details:

Auto Enginuity (www.autoenginuity.com/) OBD-II reader and supplied software
- cannot detect protocol
- used about a year ago and worked fine, prior to "oil in engine harness" issue

OBD Pros (www.obdpros.com) OBD-II reader and supplied software
- cannot detect protocol
- forced into ISO mode, cannot connect

I have a 2003 C230.
- It uses an ISO connection
- Dealer has been able to read codes since "oil in engine harness" issue
- Dealer uses Star Diagnostic, which connects via the OBD-II port
- I have the schematic for the OBD-II port for a 2003 C230, the only connection is the ISO connection to the ECU, pin 7
- Thus if the dealer uses the OBD-II port successfully, an OBD-II reader should be able to as well

So I cannot explain why 2 different OBD-II readers cannot detect the protocol or connect to the car, yet Star Diagnostics still works.

I'm blaming the "oil in engine harness" issue on this, stupid MB reliability.

I use software from http://www.obd-2.com/, Alex Peper. Has worked for me for years on all types of cars including our SLK230 and C230K. The software looks a little primative but that's on purpose so it can run on any old laptop.

Update your profile with location so maybe someone in your area can let you borrow their reader to compare.

I'll second the Alex Pepper OBDII reader. I've never had a problem reading codes with it. On virtually all brands of vehicles. I run it on an old IBM B&W laptop, that I paid $25.00 for.
