Salt, sand, dirt, everything can damage your wheels. This is why you'll see many with the steel rims don't even bother putting on hubcaps. Even washing every week doesn't help, I couldn't wash my car for almost 2 weeks cause even if I did, it was so slushy out that it would've been dirty again in 10 mins of driving.

Also, like mentioned, accidently hitting something burried in the snow, like the curb, there's a good chance of that too.

I get what you mean by not wanting to spend the cash on something you don't "need", but you "need" snow tires. It does suck, cause even that $500 I blew on used tires/rims is a whole car payment, or a start towards a set of nice 18" tires/rims...

Hi,

I just received my order from tirerack - 4 16" steel rims with 205/55 Dunlop Winter Sport M2 and hubcaps. I paid $680 for it including shipping. I'll put them on this Saturday - I already came into the first snow (4-6 inches) and while it was drivable with my C7, I don't want to do it any longer then necessary....

I bought a set of the factory 16's with the all-season Michelin tires for this winter, I bought them for 400$, I was more afraid of messing up my c7 wheels from bad road conditions, it only snows 4-5 times in the winter here, but the roads become cracked, and there seems to be a lot of potholes, and after a light snow you cant see them.
