In the case of a 2002 coupe, only needs to be 229.3 I believe.
Kragens has 5w-30 valvoline syntec on sale that meets this standard.
The 20-50 meets both.

C220 cdi W203
This oil is used by MB-dealerships in Europe for the Diesel (cdi) versions because a diesel is more sensitive than a car that runs on fuel. I used to have 10W40 in my C220 cdi and changed to the newer 10W30 and noticed a bit of difference. It even sounds a bit smoother than before.

In the famous words of a very popular sit-com, 'NO Soup for you!'
Stick with only what is recommended, repairs are too expensive to be experimenting with alternatives in one's engine.

2005 C Wagon (No snickering please!)
Typical Properties
Mobil 1 0W-40 SAE Grade 0W-30
Value
Viscosity, ASTM D 445 445
cSt @ 40º C 78.3 63.1
cSt @ 100º C 14 11
Sulfated Ash, wt%, ASTM D 874 1.2 1.0
Phosphorous 0.1 0.08
Flash Point, ºC, ASTM D 92 230 228
Density @15º C kg/l, ASTM D 4052 0.85 0.845
Total Base Number (TBN) 11.3 8.5
MRV at -40ºC 26242 11,100
Viscosity Index 186
HTHS Viscosity, mPa•s @ 150ºC, ASTM D 4683 3.7 2.99
Comparing these two oils side by side makes them look very nearly the same, until you see the Total Base Number (TBN) and Mini Rotary Viscosity (MRV). The TBN measures the additive in the oil to neutralize the acid coming into the crankcase. Notice that the specified oil has about 50% more of this additive.
http://www.blackstone-labs.com/do_i_need_a_tbn_.html
The MRV is also more than twice for the MBZ 229.5 oil.
It is false economy to use service parts that do not meet the manufacturer specifications. Don't use additives either. There is no "mechanic in a can" that can prevent repairs or cure an abnormal condition. The guys selling seafoam, slick 50, linkite, motor up and the like are buying Lambo's and large sailboats with your money.
