Project 13 second Benz

As of the beginning of this month, we at XXXXXXXX have started what we would like to call "Project 13 Second Benz."
The main goal of this project is to get our C230 in the mid to low 13 second quarter mile During this project we will use products developed through our R&D department, do all installations in house, and provide time slips/ dyno runs to show what did or did not work for us. Though performance is our main goal of this project, it will not be our only order of business. We will also add our own touch to the body, and as with the performance mods, all or most body/ interior mods will be manufacture and installed in house. All parts will be available for purchase once all testing has been performed. Any suggestions would be great.

Week one12-6-02: We took our new, bone stock, C230 to LACR (Los Angeles County Raceway) for Friday Night Grudge.

We ran a best E.T. of 15.9 launching the car at 3500 rpm, all runs were very consistent giving us the impression this was the best the car could do. (Please not LACR is very high altitude, a slightly uphill track and very rough)

Week two

Week two 12-9-02- 12-13-02: We fabricated our own pulley and it was ready for installation.

Friday afternoon we install our new pulley and take the car for a spin around the block! WOW! We decided the pulley made a great improvement and decided to take the car back to LACR next Friday 12-21-02, but the realize it only 6pm and we could still get a few runs in if we left now! (Knowing that LACR is an awful track, we will continue to use it since it close to our shop 40-50 miles, and it will show better improvement results if we use the same track)

We arrive at the track, pass tech (all you need are paper plated and they don’t even check the car), line up and try our same 3500 rpm launch as last week- BIG NO NO- unless you like to see the tires go up in smoke and go absolutely nowhere.

So we line up for run number two and launch at a more conservative 2500 rpm, the car leaves the line in the same manner as it did the week prior at 3500 rpm, just lightly hazing the tire and an impressive E.T. of 15.4 plus an additional 3 miles per hour 87.5. The trap speed told us that we could get better than a 15.4, though we realized our first problem starting the third run. The car was getting a tenth slower every run for the rest of the night, even with the same launch and shifts. This is where we realized the absolute need for a larger/ more efficient intercooler. If you read the last post I mentioned how the car was very consistent the first week, though with the larger pulley and extra boost the stock intercooler became nothing more than a new paperweight.

Week Three

We have started development of our new intercooler, and began test fitting. We found that installing the new intercooler will not be at all difficult if you installed your own pulley. The job is not as intense as some make it out to be. A test dummy was built, and mounted, to find out the largest size we could possibly fit. Once this was determined we made the first prototype, unfortunaly we have been rained out this week and the next drags are in mid Jan, though we do see a definite improvement in around the block testing. Waiting this period will also allow for the computed to adjust for the pulley/ intercooler (please note we only had the pulley on for less than 2 miles before the testing at the drags, we will get better numbers next time even with out the new intercooler, we will test next just the pulley, then the next week with both mods)

Did you guys run any dyno tests before undertaking the modifications? That would give you a better benchmark than simply taking the car out on the track and running times.

The car is a six speed, and no we did not do a dyno run prior to the first mod. We just moved to our new shop and will not be getting our dyno installed till after the first of the New Year. Though we will remove our pulley, drive the car for a couple hundred miles, and with the help of our friends at Primedia, do our base dyno run. We will the reinstall the pulley, drive the car again for a couple hundred miles, and the start doing a dyno run with every track run.

Any mods, performance, body...etc you guys would like to see us do, just post the idea and we will try it out.

You’ve already tried pulley and intercooler…but I’d like to see more results with the addition of the following mods: chip, cold air intake, differential change, water spray mist on intercooler, spark plugs….and oh a turbo if you can please

Actually we have only tried the pulley, at the track that is, the intercooler was only tested around the block. The thought on the turbo is not out of the question, we believe that the stock supercharged is going to be one of the first thing to make the next paper weight, so far it has not yet been decided which way we are going to go. Programming wise we believe it would be better to stay with a supercharger, though performance wise we believe we will get better numbers all around with the turbo....Maybe we will test both. As for the rear end swap that is next on the list. A cold air system will be produced though as many other have tried and gotten poor results, we believe it will be more of an appearance upgrade than a performance one.

Also everybody please note where test are being done- LACR- I have mentioned it is a bad track, though I have not stated that the average correction on that track is .4-.6 tenths when compared to a sea level track without an uphill slope, and normal track conditions.

Sounds like a turbo or spray.

You might want to try different axle ratios to see if you can eliminate an ill timed shift or limit wheel spin. The stock coupe axle ratio is 3.27:1. The C320 is 3.23:1 and the C32 is 3.07:1.
With the amount of power you are trying to get, and the wheel spin you already have, you might do well with a C32 ratio axle.

Thanks for the response about axel ratio, but I believe we will be going the other way and installing a rear axel out of a C240, and a sticker pair of rear tires. Others have already gotten as much as 4 tenths by switching to this combo, but we will test it and see for ourselves.
