radar detector install

ok folks - i have searched and only find reference to one switched source at fuse #7 in the rear fuse panel. from what i can tell, the moonroof should be switched ( it only works with the key on) - so why can't i find a positive wire in the light cluster that provides switched power to the moonroof?

I found a switched fuse under the hood and used that. I can't remember which one it was though. Then I just ran the wire through the firewall and up the side of the dash and around to the window.

wish i could find it; plus, how did you tap into the fuse? i have read that there is actually an adapter that plugs into the fuse ( blank) location that provides a positive connection

ytd, while testing wires in the light cluster i was amazed i couldn't find a positive wire from the moonroof motor - i thought for sure that was the easiest thing to tap into

Switched source?

Have you considered the cigarette lighter?

tapping cigarette lighter power

Remove the cigarette lighter holder/body from its hole and use the connector on the bottom...or directly into the wire with a T anywhere along the length. Make sure you have a fuse coming off the detector hot/+ wire. I haven't done this but have been considering a detector and looked for a good switched hot line. You wouldn't have to worry about overloading the lighter fuse even when both are in use.

i agree - a very good choice if. IF, running through the console to the pillar isn't a rediculous task - i will look at that tomorrow as that beats running to the rear fue box. nothing came up under my search so i will post results if others can benefit.

power routing

low amp/small wire is all that is needed and you should be able to hide it in existing openings where the headliner and glass split and same with the pillar. You can use a local ground in the overhead console.

i sent u mail - got a pretty good reference who says simply no choice but the #7 fuse in the rear fuse box or the cigarette lighter up front - getting through the front console looks menacing however i am going to take a look at that option today - the ground is easy - the switched positive source is not - any other thoughts are most appreciated

Re-read Peet's post above. Then, if the temptation to do other strikes again, re-read Peet's post one more time.

Wiring to the rear fuse block is a snap. Plus, you don't have to splice into any wires. (BTW, I did not find any switchable circuits under the hood in my sedan.)

Ground the negative wire to the Inst. Panel fuse block mount and run the Positive to the trunk along the carpeting/door sill. Use a credit card to push the wire under the plastic door sill. Any automotive parts store carries "spade lug" crimp connectors (use the male half) suitable for adapting as the plug that fits into the #7 slot (sometimes #6 is also available).

I'm still saying that you can do it through the fuse box under the hood, because that's what I did, and it works fine. I just don't know which fuse it was. Once I found the right one, I had someone wire it for me and run the wire through the firewall and then up under the dash, around, and then to wherever you want to put it.

You just have to get a test light and test all the fuses when the key is on and then when it is off to see what goes off with the key. There is nothing in the dash side fuse box, but I think there were at least one or two under the hood.

Please tell me that you didn't use a test light to check the fuses. A test light has no place any where in these cars. Also, don't use fuse taps, they will screw up the fuse block. The cig lighter is easy and safe if you don't want to go to the trunk. You can even be lazy and push the wire out the bottom side of the counsel to run it forward and then tuck it later.
