Rear Main Seal, Anyone DIY?

Hi, my mother purchased this car against the advice of my father and I. Its an 03 c240 4matic, purchased new with 86k miles on it now. I have been scared of major issues with it since new but luckly its only needed a water pump till now. The dealer noticed that there was an oil leak between the crank and transmission, so that means a rear main seal = 2400 dollar fix from the dealer.

I am contemplating doing the repair myself, has anyone done it before? or at the least has anyone dropped the tranny and have any advice for me?

I've done all sorts of stuff automotive DIY but this will be the biggest job ive done alone...

that depends on the kind of equipement you have available and the time in which she needs it done. i have access to most everything needed and the mercedes rarely gets driven, so i would DIY and not think twice about it. however- i've got access to a lot of goodies that the average weekend DIY guy doesn't have.

at the very least- you are going to need a lift and a tranny jack would certainly help. this is not the type of job i would even attempt while laying on my back/creeper with a set of jack stands.

Tools wise I should have anything I will need except another pair of jackstands and a tranny jack, which i have access to borrow.

But yes, time wise and equipment wise I should be able to complete the job but on the ground rolling around on my back...

me, personally, i wouldn't try to drop a tranny w/o a lift. that's entirely too much mass to try to work with on your back- at least for my little arms anyway
