My Daughter's C230 .....
is around 4 months old with 6000 miles. A few nights ago while driving, she called me on her cell phone in a panicky voice, and said that a "Coolant Malfunction" message popped up, along with "Visit Workshop." I told her first to calm down, and monitor the temperature - if the temperature was normal - there was no need to be immediatly concerned. It's interesting to note that when this warning message came up, the temperature display came up automatically. A couple of days later, with the temperarure still normal, she drove to her MB dealer, and it turned out to be a "bad coolant sensor." The sensor was replaced and she's happy again.
It's also kind of interesting that so many of the problems that I've read about on these boards are due to "sensors" and "firmware/computer glitches." Real "hardware" problems are just about non-existent.

Funny but when my thermostat went out at 4,000 miles the Check Engine light went on without any other indications.Their first reaction was to replace the sensor (shoot the messenger theory). On my second visit, they replace the thermostat. All is well now. It's part of the charm associated with german cars. If they didn't break they are likely made in Japan or in the U.S.
I wonder if the Brazilain C240s don't break down as much.

I wouldn't bet on the Brazilian cars. The GTI's that are made in Brazil always report rattling problems, poor workmanship.
The mexican VW's are the same way, they rattle as well.
