Touchshift Question

I've read in the manual that if you are driving at a certain gear other than 5th gear, and you HOLD the shifter to the left, the dashboard indicator will automatically display the gear that the car is in.

Example: You are driving around 80km/h in 3rd gear, your dashboard indicator says D for drive. You hold shifter to the left, it should change from D to 3. Has anyone tried this?

Yes it will show you what gear you are in because you will be downshifting to the lowest gear possible based on the speed you are going.

Yeah, it's not like it will "just show you" the gear your in while in Automatic. No, if you hold to the left it will go into "Touchshift mode" meaning that you'll be able to select your own gears from that point on (until you upshift to 5 which is also "D").

if ur in "D", and u hold the lever to the left while accelerating, not only will "D" change to the current GEAR ur supposed to be in, but you'll also see the tranny downshift.....say.... from "D" to "4" to "3" or "2" depending on how hard u floor the accelerator. From there, you'll have to tap it manually to upshift.

If you hold the gear lever to the left the car will shift to the lowest possible gear, however in the C32 it will be more aggressive...I mean when I drive C32 in "D" mode at about 35mph, if I hold the gear lever to the left then it will downshift to "3" or sometimes even "2", on my C200K it will only downshift to "4".

At 80 km/h, it is already telling you what gear you are in. No need to hold the shifter to the left. At that speed, you are in 5th gear. So it says D which is 5th. To be driving that speed in 3rd gear, you would have to select 3rd with the touchshift and what would it say: 3. You cannot drive at that constant speed in D and have it be in third gear. It is an automatic, so it will upshift.

There is no touchshift "mode". You always have to select your highest gear. If you put it in D, you are selecting to have 5th be the highest gear that it goes to. If you push it to the left, you will change which gear you want to be the highest. You can always select your own gears. There is only one mode.

I see. You guys use touch shift for quick starts right? Most people on here have a manual tranny and laugh at the touch shift because there is no advantage to it. I use it only for night time other then that it really serves no purpose.

Meaning that I use it at nights, primarily when the streets are empty, and the freeways/highways/roadways are perfect for racing.

Its really easy to hit the rev limiter. Go like 45 mph, keep slamming the touch shift left while keeping foot of the gas, and wait till it goes to 4k rpm in say 2nd gear. Immediately floor the crap out of it and boom

Mine starts to cut off fuel and pull back and forth.

Now my car is making some crappy noises.

What sucks is that u can only rev to 4k rpm if ur stopped. I dont like that. Espeically if u have a Manual and u want to drop the clutch real high. Dealer vehicles are great for this. Gotta love it

It doesn't take too many of those to wear out a clutch. It's a bad idea and 4k is high enough, do you need to go higher? And why drop the clutch? That accomplishes nothing but lots of wheel hop and little acceleration.

I use my touchshift all the time.
a. Downshifting
1. Corners
2. On steep downhills to avoid goosing the brakes

b. For quick takeoffs

If you put in on 1 and gun it, it will go to redline on each gear before changing, or close to it, which is a little unnerving if you are pushing hard through a corner and suddenly....
bump to next gear by itself.

When I'm going fast in a corner and pushing it, I want it to stay in gear!
But then i don't live in the flatlanders like most of you guys...
I got some serious fun roads in my backyard, or seriously dangerous if yer not careful.

And then there's the adaptive portion of the tranny...sometimes it won't upshift...I guess it thinks it knows better.
Times like that I wish I had the manual shift.
But sitting in bumper to bumper traffic...well it's a good compromise.

I find taking of from 3rd seems to work better than D.
And 3 is the gear I use the most on mountain roads for better control.

If I am at high speed and I want to downshift to lower gear, if by doing so will hit the red line, will the system prevent me from downshift? I am still not brave enough to try it... (I am talking about touchshift)

The system will prevent it.
Afraid tyo try!
Heck, I couldn't drive without it!
It will only go into a gear if below redline, and will upshift by itself, when it hits close to redline.
count your clicks wisely grasshoppah.

Tell us again why your car is making noises.....how many neutral drops have you tried on that thing?

The limiter is there to prevent you from over revving the engine when there is no load on the motor. 4K is dead smack in the middle of the power band, youve got over 200ft-lbs of torque, and HP is climbing...there's little need to rev higher for a launch...you'll just wear out the clutch faster. I find 3500 gives the best launch anyway.

Fast Cars!
i know this cant be good for my car but lately like if i am at a traffic light and i am with my friend or someone next to me i use the touch shift and leave it in 1 if i see a traffic very very close the other. the reason for this is because when its in first gear and is already revving at 5k, lol one little tap on the gas makes u feel like the cars god 400lbs of toqure. So lets hear it? how bad is this for my car?

First you gotta put down the drink, get some sleep and try to explain yourself better tomorrow.

Seriously though, I don't know what you are asking. You're gonna have to be a little more clear.

I thought it just creates a lot of noise but doesn't go anywhere. See, I do the opposite. I put it in 4th gear and go at a mild pace -- this way I'm not going that fast but the car is making helluva noise (get attn this way).

I live in the Sheepshead Bay area --- Bensonhurst isn't too far away.

Ok ok, sorry about that guys, u did guess it though, i only had around 2 hours of sleep.

What i was trying to say was, if i feel like playing around if i am stopped at a traffic light, but see another light Red in front of me i will use the touch shift and not shift from 1st gear, when i am about half way to the light it is fun to just tap on the gas and feel the car jerk forward with alot of power. At the time it is at redline it is time for me to stop since the light is red. All i was saying is i basicly am having the car revving at 4-5k as i am drving 20mph. Stupid? i know it is. But its fun to feel the power that way, not to mention it is loud. But i was just asking how bad it is for the car?
