I have no idea about the w211 brakes into the w210...
About cameras:
Either the XSi or the D90 will be fine for a new user...
Buy just the body. Dont get the kit lens - they're not that good.
I would suggest to buy a good fixed focal length (prime) lens (50mm or 85mm). They're fast, pretty sharp, and not too expensive. Later after you've figured out how to use the fixed focal length well and have run into the limitations that the primes have, then buy yourself a good telephoto and/or wide angle. It pays to pay a lot for a good one.
Buy a filter to put on your lens to protect the glass and for your photography needs.
Read lots: DPreview.com and flickr are a great means of gathering lots of information about photography in any specific area that you want to get into.
We should really create an official "Getting into DSLR's" thread. Or a photography section on the forums :x

Would you mind explaining what the major differences between the Kit Lens VS. Fixed Focal (Prime) lens?
![nix](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/nixweiss.gif)
Which would you recommend?
Which brand of filter would you recommend? I’m assuming you’re talking about a UV filter?

edit: as cool as a chat room is, those who miss out on the chat while it happens will never get to read back upon the discussed subject and being able to search/read old discussions is what makes forums cool
