Hatch lower clear panel

I was waxing my car the other day and noticed something real unusual with the hatch glass. I'm talking about the hatch's lower (lexan or plexi????) section that blends into the tailights. Well my car is only 1 month old and the plastic clear hatch panel is already cracking from the bottom up (8 1" cracks very visible). I had a feeling this would happen when I realized that it was not real glass at the dealer and also the rounded shape it has. I've only opened the hatch once since I took delivery of the car so I know it's not due to slamming the hatch. Anyhow, I'm taking in the car to the dealer next week for a fuel gage problem (if full of gas-when you shut the car off and restart it it reads half a tank and stays there) and was wondering if anyone else encountered either problem.

My fuel gauge is playing up, too! After filling up to the top, it shows 3/4 for a long time, then, after half a day or so, the needle begins to crawl up to almost 100%... Rather annoying...

Have yet to check the condition of the plastic window - now that you mentioned it...

In reference to the fuel gage, yeah that's what mine does and sometimes it takes a long time to reach it's actual reading.

Just a thought about the fuel guage... are you guys shutting the car off when filling it? I used to have a 99 Cougar, and if I left it running while filling up it would take a while for the guage to show the true reading. If I shut it off, when I turned it back on it was fine. Maybe the C230k is the same way? Just a thought.

Thanks ED,

but yeah I already checked that one out, my 2000 VW VR6 did that and in this car it's off completely during filling, when you fire it up it reads full tank. Then if you shut if off and restart after about say 5 minutes, it will read only half a tank and it will take unusually about 1 hour or so long to return to it's actual reading. Seems like the sending unit is sticking. Oh well it doesn't hurt to have it checked out

Ed,

If you don't shut the car down when filling, you'll have the "check engine" light come on as soon as you take the filler cap off. The OBD-II system is very sensitive to the fuel tank vapor pressure.

Most dealers (not only MB) specifically mention this to new customers, advising them to always shut the engine down before-, and thoroughly tighten up the filler cap after refuelling.

My fuel gauge works, so I would take it to the dealer. All this electroinc stuff, who knows. Or wait until you have a few thousand miles on it. I have 2500 and no problems, may be mine was built mid week and not on Friday. Best of luck.

fuel guage

Hi guys,
I was going to post this separately, but since this thread seems to have jumped to fuel guages, here goes. I'm one of those people who reads directions. So when fueling my car, I stopped when the gas pump switched off automatically, and I did not top off the tank. I was surprised to see that the fuel guage showed only 5/8 of a tank. Since I was in a hurry, I waited until the next day to refuel. Same thing happened. Pump stops, fuel guage reads 5/8's full. It doesn't rise above that. I've only got 507 miles on the car so I'm still learning about it. I vaguely remember a similar post several weeks (months?) ago, but forget the resolution. ???

So, this seems to be one of the first common problems with the Coupe so far.... Maybe MBTech208 can chime in?
