Smartkey

Hello

I have read other posters having problems with thier smart keys. So far I have not had any problems with it until today. It's very cold here in the midwest and I noticed my key would not lock the car but would open it. My key now works and from what I can tell it's because the key is now warm. Has anyone else had problems with thier keys when the key is exposed to cold? By the way love my C320 best German car I have owned.

hmmm, how exactly did your key get to a temperature below its operational limits??? you accidentally leave them in the freezer again?

seriously, mine are usually in my pocket, or in my desk drawer, fairly regular temps... i have a feeling your key is messed up and its time to go to the dealership.

shhh... i leave my keys in the car in my uninsulated garage so it gets pretty cold sometimes. ok so far (but maybe i won't do it anymore if its an issue). so it may not be a temperature issue. definitely take it in and get a new one. there are some threads in the tech forum re the new vs old keys.

i once accidentally left may sony clie in the car (in canada) and it erased everything! that sucked.

i have heard stories of mercedes and bmws being stolen out of peoples garages at night, cause people leave their keys in the car, in their garage.

personally i think its silly to fear your car being stolen out of your garage, but it has happened.

and i digress.... dont leave sensitive electronic devices in places that exceed reasonable temperatures

I had an intermittent problem w/ my smartkey about two months after I purchased my C240 back in the summer. I changed the batteries and haven't had a problem since. If you can get the batteries at a local store, you might want to try that first to avoid a trip to the dealer. If the batteries are weak, maybe they're affected by the cold temps. Just a thought.

are the smart keys water proof? that part that you remove seems very small and i'm afraid that it might fall out of my wetsuit pocket (when i get my car).

I doubt the smart keys are waterproof, probably just water resistant to rain, etc. I don't plan on testing them intentionally. Get a large key ring so the mechanical key doesn't fall out of your wet suit.

Smarkeys are definitely NOT waterproof. Get some kind of keychain and attach it to the removable metal key.
