Smart Key / replace outer case
Hi gang,
So, I just bought an '04 C320 4matic wagon. The car rocks but it only came with one key. I ordered a new key and I'd like to spruce up the original key. It came with what looks like dog bites and scratches.
I know that you can purchase keys on ebay and was told that I can swap the inner components so that I have a new case for the key. I know how to remove the battery portion but can't figure out how to split it open to remove the module/board.
Does anyone know how to do this without breaking the module?
thanks!
Michael

On my 02 Coupe ....remove the cut metal key, then use that to depress the grey plastic release lever in the cavity the cut key came out of. Slide the battery tray out, then carefully grip the circuit board with a tweezer, hemostat or precision pliers and slide it gently out of the smart key case.
Stuff the guts into the replacement case and you're good to go.

sorry to hijack this old thread (it shows I searched, at least), but how do I remove/replace the color-coded release button on the key? I've got the battery compartment out, but can't figure out how to remove the blue button so I can switch it with my black one.

Its the housing only new cheaper and it comes with batteries.
Eddie. I just pry that little piece out with a small flat head from the top it has smell teeth that hold it in on the bottom on the inside/side of the key this might not be the best way, but it has worked for me many times.
