It's no AMG-special order special; the M-B website in Europe lists it as a production model along with all the other C Classes...
The problem of high NOx and particulates is addressable with particle filters and oxydation catalysts. The real reason the cars are not here is the Rube Goldberg Diesel fuel we have in N America...

yes I've seen and heard a TDI Jetta, it still smells like a diesel (which is a known carcinogen!!!), its just not belching out the black smoke anymore...and its still NOT a LEV.

THe carcinogen is from the particulates in the diesel exhaust. Its not that "smell" that's going to give you cancer. Actually, dust and other flying debris has also been a suspect in causing lung cancer. Avoid those dusty texas roads.

Compared to the current production CDI and "d" model BMWs, the American VW TDI is a crude engine. We rode in an E220 CDI taxi in Stuttgart, and you honestly CANNOT tell its a diesel. It doesnt smell and 90% of the time it sounds like a gas engine. It also puts out less CO2 than gas cars.

All MB CDIs meet EU-3 standards effective 2005. I guess they are LEVs or close if not.
FYI, all MB gas engines meet EU-4 standards effective 2005.

LEV, ULEV, SULEV
The problem with these standaards is that they are biased against Diesels. There is nothing empirical about their establishment - it was a 100% political decision.
The best way to point this out is that a car that gets 15 MPG or worse can be classified as a LEV or better. But it's producing 400+ g of CO2 per km.
In the LEV classification system, CO2 does not count as a pollutant. That is its major downfall. Diesel CO2 emissions are usually 40% lower than those of a gas engine.
I suppose it all depends on what the major emission target is: smog, global warming, both or neither.
Diesels are very clean these days, and Peugeot's innovative particulate trap reduces them to gasoline engine levels. There's no longer much of an excuse, other than the poor quality of Diesel fuels (which is being addressed in Canada by 2007).

If you want to point fingers at diesels (which as an owner, I do not) then point your fingers at the major contributors to whatever you are complaining about. Cars are barely noticable on the radar screen of diesel emmissions. Specifically the amount of exhaust coming from diesel cars is a gnat on tail of the big dog - commercial trucks.

Here in Europe (Austria), the sports package is being offered since March... you pay about 1K more for the following options:
17 inch alloys
amg brake pads means that you are stuck to 17" in winter and summer
sport seats
leather steering and leather gear shift knob
a more solid look from the outside
Of course you can get the AMG CDI which also includes teh sport packet... And please, don't compare a VW diesel with a mercedes diesel... these two engines are as far apart as america is from europe!! The merc diesel uses the bosch common rail diesel technique whereas the VW uses the "pumpe duse" technique. The VW has more torque than the equivalent common rail but therefore it is much louder!!
Having driven my merc for 2 years, I can not imagine driving a petrol anymore... the torque available to a diesel is amazing and on top of that, the torque is there from 1500 revs whereas in a petrol the little torque that is offered is only there at higher revs... my question: do you guys drive at higher or lower revs?????? atleast here in europe with high petrol prices, it is impossible to constantly drive in high revs!! In my diesel, my passengers get stomach ache every time i accelerate!!! That makes the diesel awesssssssssssssssome!!
guys, don't be so prejudice!! Diesel rulz if you have driven one!!
regards from vienna
Rumman
ps. my easter holiday: 500 miles, average speed on the austrian and german autobahn: 90 mph, petrol consumption: 48 mpg... and mind you for those who have not experienced this, when you drive at 130-140 mph, the only noise you hear is the air resistance and not whether you have a diesel or a petrol

With the Diesel, you could also add a Propane system for a average increase of 20-30%. At least these systems are available for trucks, the tank mounting may present a problem though.
