Both my remotes for my C240 ran out of batteries within 6 months...Same thing happened to my friend's C320 and she replaced her battery at the dealership for $20!!!!!
d.i.y. tip:
1) Press the button and remove the metal key.
2) Inside you will find another grey button. Push it inward (using the metal key) and simultaneously, pull the top portion of the remote up.
3) You'll find the battery compartment. Replace the battery with a Duracell DL2025 3V or equivalent. You can get these anywhere you'll find watch or garage door opener batteries. (About $3).
4) Save $17...

Ummm, within first year, I thought Mercedes-Benz picked up the tab. Battteries are wear/tear items, but 6 months is a bit excessive...
After 9-months both my remotes are running strong.

2001 MB CLK55
Another quick & dirty check before you pop for batteries - make sure the contacts are actually making decent contact. I've brought 3 "dead" keys back to life this way.

MY01 E320S (COMAND/K2a/sunroof/full leather/heated seats) - the wife's
