stereo ripoff?

I know alot of us are disappointed with the bass produced by the "Premium" Bose sub. Recently I read a post saying that the coupe's sub was only a 4x6, but I was under the impression that it was the "9" Nd Neodymium Iron Boron high-efficiency woofer" I remember the 2002 coupe brochure stating that it was the 9" sub and I checked MBUSA and the 2003's Premium sound also lists the 9" sub. It's the exact same price as the Preimum sound for the C230k sedan, but we get less speakers and a smaller sub? So today I removed the panel to see for myself. Here's the picture. Isn't this false advertising? It's definitly the 4x6 which is rediculous because my computer speakers have a larger sub than that. Is there anything we can do about this? I know there have been posts about the sub before but I never knew I didn't have the real 9" one. Is it possible to get reinbursed? I doubt it but it might be worth a try. Secondly, has anybody considered getting a box custom built that would fit and putting a real sub in there. You might be able to fit up to a 10" but for sure an 8" with a small amp. That would pretty much do the trick. It's a pretty large space and its got some depth too...the bose sub box itself is like 4 inches deep or more. Any ideas on how we got ripped off, and has anybody put a different sub in that space?

You ever see the tiny drivers in a home Bose "bass module"? It's incredible that you get such low bass from a couple 4" drivers! It's no subwoofer, mind you. And the quality of the bass is frowned upon by most audiophiles, but it is incredible none the less
And that 4x6 Bose driver, if those are its measurements, is NOT your typical 4x6 driver! It's most likely a long excursion design specifically built as a low frequency transducer.

Jim, Bose may be able to create great bass out of such a small speaker. But the one in the coupe is certainly not great. The sedan is better. It at least has better bass because it has a different location for the sub and I think it is bigger also. So even if Bose is capable of producing a great 4x6 speaker, they sure didn't put that one in the coupe.

The same 4x6 is in the wagon and it is certainly not an ordinary 4x6, especially as it is loaded. The bass is decent for my music (classical and jazz) but it ain't no sub. OTOH, I don't need one (in my car).

Kal (who has never heard a car system that can match a good home system nor needs to)
