Renntech Muffler Install

Linh and I got the Renntech muffler on and it looks good and these are some pics.

To me, the muffler sounds a little louder at idle and taking off, a low rumble but most of the time it's the same as stock from inside the car, even at full throttle. From outside is sounds a lot better. We kept looking for the volume control but couldn't find one. My car has a resonator and I may remove that to get it a little louder but that requires welding so I'll have schedule time at a muffler shop.

Here's some pics of the mufflers old and new -

Looks awesome Buell! Beautiful car, I have a C7 2002 coupe, if I wanted the same system would I just have to get the muffler? Or do I also need a soundpipe or something?

It's just a muffler.

Renntech charges $790 but I got it second hand so I paid less. Don't know what it cost to install but it takes about an hour, probably a lot less if I sprung for the pipe cutter. A muffler shop can do it in 10 minutes, probably for $25-35. It's basically a Sebring muffler, a higher end line of Remus but has the Renntech name stamped on the tips. The Remus looks identical and is about $500 from a discount place.

ones too fast according to CHP!
Buell,

Muffler looks nice. Looks like a SuperSprint, which would make sense as they make them for most tuners.

However, one word of advice. That clamp will NOT hold. You really should have that welded on to prevent rattles and leaks.

Thanks

Brad

buell, keep us updated if the sound changes. i believe that muffler is supposed to increase in sound as it breaks in. tell us how it sounds in a couple of weeks, preferably with the res still on.

Buell, thanks.

On the sound issue, ALL mufflers need a break in period of 500-1000 miles to get their true sound.

Thanks

Took the muffler off and that have me the sound I like, a nice mellow tone, not anywhere as loud as I expected. Also picked up 5 1/2 rwhp and 6 lb-ft torque on the dyno. I put everything back for now, give it a month to break in, see if it ages well, still smells from the break in.

Did u pick up the HP with the renntech on or no exhaust?

How loud was it, keep in mind u have the resonator. I was considering a strait pipe but the loss of backpressure doesnt make it worth it.

I took the Renntech muffler off and picked up the extra power and it was across the power band, actually looked good on the dyno. The loss of backpressure didn't seem to bother the car and rewarded me with the extra ponies. It's hard to compare the sound of the straight pipes to anything but I'll try. This was indoors in a garage, at idle and low RPM it was wonderful, not loud at all, a deep hot rod rumble. I would compare it to a Harley with aftermarket pipes, not a Harley with straight pipes. Even then it sounded quieter than a Harley and deeper. At higher RPMS the engine noise competed with the exhaust so it didn't make the room any louder than it already was, just different. Keep in mind I have the resonator and this was indoors and there was a wall about 4' from the back of the car to echo the sound. It would sound quieter outside and I don't think you would get stopped or ticketed, it just not that loud. I'm think about putting in a Y pipe with a valve to bypass the muffler at the flip of a switch.

Thats cool that you picked up power, i guess hte stock piping from the headers back and the cat and resonator provide some degree of backpressure, or else u would be losing power?

I would like to try that one day too, but im concerned if i drove around the block without a muffler, will it burn anything under the car since there is hot fumes?

Anything is possible but there is a heatshield in that part of the car that seperates the muffler from the car so I don't think you'll damage anything. If you are worried, go to Pep Boys or any autosupply store and see if they'll sell you a pipe with a flared end so you can bolt it on in place of the muffler and hold it on with coat hanger wire for a temporary setup to try it out. You may never go back to the muffler!

Thats what im afraid of! I have the remus with no resonator, same muffler as ur renntech, its deep at 1000-3000 rpm and has a constant good humm on the highway speeds, but its not enough, im young and need a bit more noise!
