antenna and FM modulators

antenna and FM modulators
Hey, my impressionn of FM modulators (whether it be XM radio, CD Changer, or etc) is that it is simply an attachment that goes to whatever audio device, plugs into the output jack of that device, and transmits an FM radio signal so your radio can pick it up??
Anyway, I saw some info on an IROCK fm modulator, which can be plugged into the headset jack of a portable device such as MP3 player.
What is the range on these fm modulators? Does it matter where in teh car you would place them? Cuz I suspect if they're of limited range and quality, then optimally they should be placed near the car's diversity antenna (I'm not sure if this is still near the rear bumper or not).

A true FM modulator connects in the antenna wire. The wire from the antenna either plugs into the modulator or the antenna wire is cut and new connectors are installed. A new wire or the part that was cut off goes from the modulator to the radio. The modulator applies the signal to an assigned FM frequency, and the radio is set to that frequency.
The is another device which does the same modulation of the FM signal, but is not physically connected to the antenna wire. Instead it uses a very low power FM transmitter to send the signal to the antenna. Again the radio is turned to the specified frequency.
