Do I need mudflaps?

I live in Ottawa and the salt, snow, mud is disgusting on the underside of the tires? I am thinking of getting mudflaps, does that help in any way?

Cheers...

They must be installed by a dealer--installation requires a special tool. I find them useful in keeping dirt out of the wheel wells.

Special tools: Phillips screwdriver (maybe drill with thin bit to do starter holes), wrench, and most importantly, a brain.

It does help to have the wheels off to do them.

Atom - I'll drive over to NY and install 'em, and charge you half of what your dealer would. :p

In all honesty, it's a simple install, and I like how they look.

Be sure to get a set of rear flaps with Yosemite Sam on them, brandishing his guns and yelling "BACK OFF".

Fronts for the summer to keep the doors clean, fronts and rears in the winter to keep rocks from pitting the rear bumper.

Do not attempt to install them yourself! There is only one certified Mercedes Benz mud flap installer authorized to do such work in the US. Only he has the special tools developed jointly by DCX, NASA, and JPL. You must book an appoinment through his assistent one full year in advance. Installation will take a week or seven days. During that time the car will be transported and secured in a top secret hanger located somewhere in a desert in Nevada.

I'm from Ottawa and would recommend it. The salt trucks are out in full force lately and you don't want your tires kicking up that stuff onto the doors and quarter panels, you'll end up with little paint chips by the time winter is over, I learned the hard way on my last car, now mud flaps are mandatory for me in the winter, but I might take them off in the summer.

I'd also recommend finding a place to get the "clear bra" installed. If I wasn't leasing I'd do it, cause when I last washed/waxed my car I noticed several paint chips on the front bumper and hood... which of course are being fixed due to my little fender bender.

I bought the mudflaps, took an hour to install by myself, most of the time was jacking up the car and taking the wheels off, the fronts can be done without taking the wheels off, but its so much easier.

Who'd you purchase from?

get the mudguards for the coupe. the dealership can order and install them. they look really great and catch almost everything coming off the tires. i know you're already convinced to get something, but you don't have to get plain old ugly mudflaps if you don't want to.

The gift basket is pretty standard, I got one too. I didn't like Olgilvie, I felt as if they treated me like just another sale, and when I didn't get a call from my salesman in 3 days I went across town and signed on the dotted line that day at Carling Motors, I felt they treated me like an actual person, not just another sale there, and when I went in to see about the repairs being done the service manager was very very nice with me. My girlfriend had a horrible time trying to buy a simple cargp net from Olgilvie, she said they practically ignored her while she was there, didn't seem like they were even interested in her business...

here's a pic of someone else's car. thanks to whoever's pics these are. these are called mudguards. mud flaps are just the flimsy pieces of rubber than hang there. you see much flaps on trucks and cheap cars. mudguards are the rigid plastic on nicer vehicles.

about $100 to order them, and $100 to install them. that's from the dealership. could be cheaper from somewhere else.

Holy crap!

They cost me $150 CND (which is like double any other mudflaps I've ever bought) so I decided to install them myself, it was very easy, and free.

The cargo net wasn't so easy to install, and I ended up breaking a retaining clip in the hatch, now I need to order a single little plastic clip.... how much will that cost? $20? $30? probably.

Mudflaps

I bought the official mudflaps from the dealer ($50?) and installed them myself with no problems. The instructions are good and it took me about 45 minutes. I took the wheels off in the back, but just turned the front wheels out of the way for the fronts.
I believe they do the job nicely. When you wash the car, there is no road "stuff" on the car; you just need to use a brush to clean the mudflaps.
