Don:

I recently went from the stock 16" to 18" rims on the Coupe with 225/40 front and 255/35 rear and noticed only a very minor difference in harshness. I attribute this mostly to the soft suspension of the MB, and have no complaints at all. Does it ride like an S-Class, well no, but does it ride and perform like a true coupe now, almost yes? The only thing the suspension needs now is better shocks and progressive springs. Given your original question, this aftermarket suspension might not be your to your liking, since the stiffness of the car will be increased 25% - 30%. As for C7 17" rims, I don't think you'll really notice and will benefit from the sportier handeling. See this thread for more information on my wheels.

Isn't it true that the ride comfort depends on the thickness of the rubber on the wheels? Not just their size?

LOL @ benzo.:p

FWIW- I rode the C7s for a couple days before swapping them out for my 16" snows. To make a long story short- I can't wait to put the 17s back on.

I put on 17" wheels on my C240 and notice a little increase in harshness, if that is what you want to call it. It does ride a little rougher over bumpier roads, since I have upped the air pressure a bit. Over good roads, you dont notice any difference in ride quality. But I think the 17's do help with handling....have 225/45/17 front and 245/40/17 rears on the C32 wheels. The cars seem to handle a little better than the 16's with 55 aspect tires.

one difference is in tire wear

I think the main difference, apart from looks, may be tire wear. The mechanic at my dealer told me that 17s get like 25 - 30k where 16s would get 35 - 40k - or something like that - all dependent on your driving style of course.

According to reviews at Tire Rack (www.tirerack.com) the Continental ContiSport that come with the 17" rims last around 15,000 miles, though some people have hit 25,000. That's basically a 1 year tire, which is typical for high performance tires of this kind.

i don't know about the standard tires, but the michelin pilot sports vs the bridgestone LM22 snow tires are very different. i feel like i'm riding on balloons. (the snow tires feel like balloons - bouncy and softer)

humm...I have the pilots on mine Anyhow, the 17's are actually going to handle better....you might get a little more road noise, but you will not tell a difference in ride....the tires are 45 series tires, which is plenty of rubber....drop down to 40's and 35's.....then you will have a rough ride

thanks everyone for your comments.

I understand why those who want increased handling would go for the C7 package. But I have decided when I place my C230 oder I will go with the standard tires and 16" rims vs. the performance tires and 17" rims. The longer life of the standards makes more sense to me because I'm not really into racing the car or testing its limits. I'm more of a cruiser who likes to give it a little throttle once in a while and take a quick turn now and then. Thanks Flashman and theLeland for the "life of tires" comments.

donn, you do realize that the c7 package is more than just the wheels/tires? for that ~$750, you get the

wheels/tires (imho, better looking wheels)
color coordinated handles
leather shifter
shorter shifting (if you get a manual)
different steering wheel w/ thumb rests
aluminum pedals w/ rubber nibs
larger (barely) exhaust tip
patterned aluminum door sills
no resonator between cat and muffler (i have no idea what i'm talking about here... but renncpe pointed this out)

depending on how you feel about those other things, it may be worthwhile. some of the stuff is not too important to me. YMMV

FYI, all Mercedes wheels have the same bolt pattern (5x112). Its the offsets that are different.

I'd like to sell my stock C7 wheels + Michelins

What's a good place to post a classified online for them? MBWorld classifieds don't seem to work.

Thanks

2002 C320 Sport *SOLD*, 2006 BMW 325i
Anyone interested in trading their chrome c7 wheels for the 2002 chrome sport rim?

These chrome rims and tires are factory c sport wheels and have about 12,000 miles on them. They come with Pilot Sports and are in good condition. These are 16 inch rims. I am looking to trade for a set of chrome c7 wheels and tires. Please post if interested.

camera is broken at this time but wheel looks like these. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2446486252

I think you may have to offer a cash incentive as most people on here are looking to increase their wheel size just like you. Plus I believe chromed rims are very rare. Most go for the std or polished look. $0.02

C230 Rims on a C240

I'd like to put the OEM rims from a 05 C230 on my 03 C240. I know there's no issue with the calibers because the C240's are smaller. My concern, besides how they will look, is fit on the rear. Going from a 205/55 to 255/40 is significant. Will they stick out to far? Maybe there's a reason why I haven't seen this before. Thanks!
