the fuel sensor isn't working correctly. happened to me before. just take it back to the dealer and they'll fix it for free. it should be under warranty. not a big deal, have your car back in no time.

This is a common problem with a number of MB classes, primarily 2001 and early 2002s (hopefully they've changed suppliers). They'll probably need to replace the fuel-sender unit, which takes about a day.

yep, common problem for MBs, not just 01 & 02. It happened on my sis's 2000 CLK320 as well. At first it was having problem as you described and then it just died.

My understanding of the problem is that most MB's use saddle tanks, and the fuel senders are pumps that pump gas from one side to the other (maintaining an even level in both tanks). The main fuel pickup is only on one side of the saddle set-up. What happens when the sender quits is that the gas doesn't get pumped from one saddle to the saddle on the side with the pump for the engine. Then what happens is that the car essentially runs out of gas when it's half full, because the other half of the gas is in the other saddle tank.

It doesn't take as long to fix this because as one would expect as there is an access panel to the sender units underneath the rear seats. The tech just has to lift up (coupe) or remove (sedan) the rear seats, access the panel and change the unit.

oops...what i meant was the sensor, not the pump that brings the gas to the other half of the tank. the pump never had a problem.
