Question Rear Emblem Replacement

I'm looking to replace my trunk lid Mercedes emblem. Before I get into removing parts I wanted to know how it was held on. Is the mercedes symbol only held on by 3m tape or is there a bolt that goes through the trunk and ties on with a nut on the inside? My reason for asking is that I just bought Carlsson badges and both the trunk and hood have a bolt and nut.

Thanks in advance for any help!

The MB star in the center of the trunk has 3 prongs in the middle and is pressed on in to place. There are three holes in the metal with plastic inserts that it mounts to, nothing on the back side (inside the trunk).

To remove, slide something to protect your paint under the outer "circle" then use a putty knife or credit card to pry it up a little. (I used masking tape) Once you pry it above the surface, you can use some pliers to grip the center and pull straight out.

I had to replace mine as someone tried to steal it and cracked the emblem. The new one was about $9 bucks at the dealer.

Thanks for the info.

I guess my question now is ...

Why would Carlsson design a rear trunk badge with a bolt in the center?

(it looks identical to the hood badge and after looking at some Carlsson pics the front and rear are the same size..from what I could tell)

Maybe they want you to drill a hole in your car

However, I would use some double sided tape before I would do that!

you don't need to drill any holes for the Carlsson badge, it uses the existing hole

Does anyone have the dimensions and or a picture of the backside of the rear/trunk Carlsson emblem?

You probably got the wrong emblem. I think some of the older cars used bolts to hold the rear emblem on.

Here is the response I got back to an email I wrote regarding the trunk emblem. Is this accurate for the 2003 c230k sedan?

"Our fitment team tells me that on the trunk, you use the center hole to
mount the emblem, and the emblem will cover up the three other holes. "

The Carlsson badge measures 39mm across the back.

No, that's not correct. There is no center hole. There are only three holes, and your bolt probably won't fit in any of them. And it would be off center even if you tried.

Kwik, even if he could put the bolt through that hole, I think it would look funny. The center of the star is where the center of those holes are. So the badge would be higher than normal if he put it in that hole.

But I can't see it working anyway. He said it was a bolt and nut that came with it. This is how the older cars worked, and I think the bolt is far too big to use those holes. You could always modify it, but I don't know how good of an idea that is. It's hard to go back after you do that. I wouldn't want to drill any holes in my trunk.

Pics always help....

Here is a pic of the back side. The "bolt" is 4mm wide and 13mm long. The badge itself is 48mm in diameter.

If you do take off the star, be very very careful. Why you ask? Because you're gonna have to put it right back on and you don't want to break it. I don't think there is any way you're gonna get that badge on there wihout drilling holes in the trunk. Do you really wanna do that?

I definitley am not going to be drilling any holes, that's for sure. Thanks for the warning. I'll take some pics when I get the star off. Won't help me much by then, but maybe it will help someone in the future.

Seriously, be careful, because the star can break very easily. It is very fragile at the end of the 3 points. So try to keep all the pulling force as near to the center of the star as possible. You can slide some kind of a wedge under it, or what I have done, is take a piece of floss or string, and slide it under the star. Then pull it all the way to the center and gently pull it out. Just move around all 3 points until you ease it out. Even if it breaks, it shouldn't be too expensive to replace.

A replacement is about $9.00 at your local dealer
