me too, not that I know anything about auto-body. I rear-ended a BMW X-5 at a red light I thought he (and I) were about to run. Man, his brakes were so much better than mine. I got a "check coolant level" message, but the car was still running (his had no visible damage at all, but wouldn't start after the impact!)

my body guy had immediately figured a bumper, a hood, a radiator, and two headlight assemblies, so like $4500+

I'm just nervous about what kinda figure the insurance company is gonna throw at me (totaled just means that the cost of repair exceeds 80% of value). I'm collecting data now on comps (I had leather, pano roof, Bose, and Sport Package, 96K). I'd but another Kompressor Coupe, a 2005 if I could find one, but there are some CLK's around that aren't too pricey. Might turn into a good news/bad news story.

Get an AMG!!! C32 or C55!! You will like it 10x more!! If they do fix it try and get them to replace your headlights with BIX or at least clears. Frosted are ugly!

I dunno 'bout an AMG...look at the damage I can cause in a C230!! My car guy actually has a beautiful 2004 CLK55 that I could have for under $20K
Link to his photo gallery

I don't know that I'd like high performance 8 cylinder...I already miss my 28 mpg!

That's a tear jerker!

Maybe try something different? A clk is pretty hot. What color?

oh boy.... hopefully you and the other guy are alright!

if you get another coupe it would be nice to keep that one for parts, but if you get a different car let me know if you part out. i have a vandalized window that i need to replace and some other things.

thanks!

(Can't quote??!) Color CLK? Depends what I find, but I always end up silver or black. Like pewter too, not that it's any more radical!

Glad to see that you're OK. I've seen some nice C230K Coupes on Ebay in the past while for very reasonable prices. I'd also have a look at Autotrader.

Thanks for everyone being glad I'm okay...I still can't believe the damn car didn't stop, and that it hit the BMW so hard. BMW driver had never had an accident before (and this one was on the day before his 35th birthday! Me, I've been driving over 30 years and had my share!). He also pointed out that it was odd my airbag didn't go off, but it really didn't feel like that much of an impact; not even the slightest neck ache in the days that followed.

One funny thing: I couldn't find my front license plate..looked under both cars, in the engine bay, it had vanished. Then, while they were winching his BMW up onto the flatbed, there it was, inside-out and wrapped around his trailer hitch like tin foil! I hit the most solid part of his vehicle!

That's the bad thing about 203 bodies......especially the coupes..........they just don't have any value anymore. The cost of repairs stay the same while the car depreciates soo low that even EASILY fixeable damages total it out. Most insurance companies make a lot more money just sending them off to salvage auctions.

I tell ya, I'm all over the place thinking about what to get....I could get my wife a BMW (3 Series xi or X3) and take her sedan....or step up to, like, an '05 CLK320 (dumb question: do the back seats fold down?), or try like hell to find a nice '05 C230K Coupe....lower my miles (and my mpg), maybe pick up some options I didn't have...

I always buy my cars at the auctions; usually they're former leases sold by MBCC. Last time I drove a rental for a few extra weeks till I found something I liked. When I can find something with warranty remaining it helps.

I won't be able to sell any parts, 'cause if they call it a total, they basically buy it from me. My next step is fighting them over the settlement, and I expect them to nickel and dime me for every little blem or scratch. They'd certainly deduct for missing door handles!

The condition of the car is of less importance than you would think when the insurance company goes for replacement values. They're only interested in the market for your year/model/options.

At $4500 in damage on a 2002 coupe, I'd say it is totaled as well. But good luck in your search for a new ride and glad you walked away unharmed!

Two things first this is scaring me "I rear-ended a BMW X-5 at a red light I thought he (and I) were about to run." mostly the last part about running the light. second the car you link to is not a clk55 it is a e55 and no clks rear seats do not fold but the e55 could have it. sorry about you car good luck finding something to replace it.

So how fast were you going when you rear ended him? [as in how hard was the impact?]

Any Benz your replacing will obviously be better than what you had before, i mean the c230 coupe is like the baseline Merc of all time [no offense], its time for an upgrade.

the light was changing from yellow to red; here in Boston we don't always stop for those (tho' I probably will for a while going forward!). and you're right: I mis-identified my friend's E55...he's got an E55, I want a CLK. I did see some posts on the CLK forum about folding down the seats, BTW.....

I'm gonna guess about 20MPH or so.....my eyes were glued to the BMW, so I'm not sure, and I couldn't have had more than a car length and a half of controlled skid before the slam. I should've taken more pics today when I emptied it, but it's too morbid. The impact didn't feel too bad: no airbags, no whiplash....but the bumper bent inward like a V into the radiator...

I agree, but I loved my little coupe. I must admit that I had been thinking about what I'd get next (subconscious self-sabotage??), and I asked myself what I really liked so much: the hatchback? the compact size? ultimately I thought it was the 4-cyl supercharged engine, and the occasional 28 mpg I'd get. I could just buy my wife a new car and drive the C320 sedan for a while, but I don't want a sedan. I figure that a CLK320 is more than one step up for me (how many steps, I'm not sure) and at least I already know mostly what I can expect from that 3.2 engine.

I'm looking forward to shopping; my car broker says I should consider the Cabriolet....

+1...yup. more than half the value of the car it's always considered a total lost unless it's some kind of historic registered vehicles.

THE C350
the clk coupe probably does have folding seats i forgot all about that model. the clk cab from what the dealer told me does not have folding seats. sorry about your loss btw did you ever fix your door lock problem we talked about a while back? and i understand about the light i have driven in Atlanta and Los Angeles enough to understand that. i was driving for my first time in ca on pch in a rented g500 and was following a guy in a g500. lol and a civic cut in front of me and i almost hit her. then about 10 minutes later at a light the g500 stopped really fast and the civic stopped really fast and i was not paying 100 percent attention to the road and almost hit the civic into the other g500. that would have been a good pic. i had less then a foot between us and locked up all four wheels. lol that was fun!! thank god i did hit her in a rental car. btw i am 19 and think of insurance spikes if i did. good luck man on finding a new car hope you dont leave the w203 family.

btw love this http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-happy093.gif
