My c230 coupe only came with 1 key and it would only unlock the doors if you were right on top of the car...no distance. Was quoted $300 from my Indy shop for a second key and same from local dealer. Decided to try another dealer...got it for $215 from Romano Mercedes in Syracuse. New style and works like a mile away.

That's what I thought too...new key fixed the problem. Old key electronics must have gone bad. Plus new key opens and closes the windows if I point the fob at the door handles. Old key does not.

Hi todd, open the key and make sure there is no fluff or debris in the front of the physical key on the inside. Be very careful when opening the key not to damage it. Another way way to test the key is take a digital camera and focus on the front where the IR sensor is, press the button and check the camera screen, if it is working you will see a faint purple light.

"New style key" may mean several things; if it matters to you, have them show you which key it is before you buy. I've had three vastly different key "new style keys" over the course of my car's life. The most recent is all plastic with no separate hatch opener button; the other two were the nicer looking (though too bulky for my taste) keys with the chrome surround.

I have the all plastic one(original) and it is cracked from wear and tear. This opens my trunk as well as my doors. It's lasted me 8 years so no complaints, I guess. May need a new one soon. Do you recommend the all plastic or the chrome surround "new style?"

They're constantly updating them, so you may not have a choice. But I've found that the all plastic ones have fewer problems - the buttons on the chrome ones just were not very strong.
But they may have improved them recently.

$350 for black key w/ blade w/ KG system. -_- , for my car, the chrome keys are not compatible with the KG system, so i had to get the black key...im starting to like it now, more sleek and smaller vs the bulky chrome keys.

I just ordered a second key for our new (to us) 2010 C300 we picked up at another dealer. Being a newbie to MB I asked the folks "Where's the second key?" to which they said "Only comes with 1 because they're expensive." That was my first learning experience of owning a higher end vehicle! Anyway; after a trip to the MB dealer I picked up a second key with blade for $228. All in all, doesn't seem too bad from what I've read.
