Question Seat belt reminder.

Read a post on MBNZ where someone stated that there is some kind of sound (beep? chirp? tone?) inside the car if you turn your ignition on without fastening your seat belt. Is is supposed to be this way, because I have never heard anything .

I'm in the habit of fastening my seatbelt after I start up and before I drive off. Every time I start my car there's a beeping for several seconds to remind me. Are you sure yours isn't doing this? If you put the seatbelt on before starting, you won't hear the beeping. I believe all cars are required to have a seatbelt "sound" and light warning.

Thanks MarkL

Yepp, I'm absolutely sure that there is no beep. However there is a light in the instrument cluster that indicates that you should fasten your seat belt. This light lights up for about 5 seconds after I have started the engine, and then it switches of, even if I don't put my seat-belt on. Maybe this is one more of those national settings? However I would like it to beep, and I just cannot see why they turned this function off in the swedish cars, since we also have laws forcing us to use seat belts.

One more thing on the "to do"-list for the first service.

Thanks again.

I believe the beeping is an American safety requirement. Since it is somewhat annoying, I would not be surprised that it was disabled in cars distributed in countries that don't require it.

I never noticed a beep/chirp. IMO, it would be annoying if there was any extended indication of an unfastened seatbelt. Drivers know the law and shouldn't need their car reminding them what to do. For those who decide not to wear their seatbelt, it is a conscious choice, being fully aware of the risks taken. Thank God for all the airbags in MB vehicles!

Although I agree with you that the decision to wear a seat belt should be a personal choice, I think you may be misguided on the effectiveness of airbags. They were designed to work with your seat belts fastened. They can cause or even add to injury if you are not wearing your seat belt.

If I am correct...trying to remember from memory..kind of scary..
but..at start up..the bells ding whether you have the seatbelt on or not..the seat belt alarm goes off when you do not have it on when the car starts forward...then you get a nice display saying your self belt is not fastened....

I guess yesterday was a bad day to quit sniffing glue because when I got home there was a seat belt warning chime and light.

mine has the beep...it is not loud or annoying like some of the other cars...it sounds more like a quick system check and then it is gone.......if you are not really paying attention you would not even notice it....

You guys (in the U.S.) who are reporting "no beep" must be belting up before you start the car. Then, you will only see the warning light. If you start up before you fasten your belt, you should hear a few seconds worth of beeping.

Is it a bad omen?

I get thirteen beeps when I'm not buckled up.

It took me a couple of months to remember to belt up before starting the car. Talk about being a slow learner! In my defense, though, I drove my crx for 7 years previously, which had those damn "passive" belts in the doors.
