mercedes has quoted me 5960$ CAD or something like that ~6000$. They don't exactly know what is broken, so they quoted me the labor and the whole sunroof.
I also have the head gasket leaking so this is my priority for now, I'll let you know what I'll be doing about sunroof when I decide.

Sunroof wont open or close.
Ok so I had the exact same thing happen to my sunroof. Tried to close it and only left side would seat properly same as some of the pictures.
Took it to the dealership. They say the drive motor was worn out and guide cables were stretched and worn, as a result.
Bad news: To close the sunroof and disconnect the drive motor $637.
Worse news: The fix is to replace the drive assembly and drive motor. $1700 at the dealer.
I'm sure there are shops that will do it cheaper but it was raining and didn't have the time to shop around, so I just paid the $637 dont really open the sunroof anyway.
Not good I know, but hope that helps everyone.

Haha, I had something similar happen to my roof. There were plastic retaining clips that broke on both tabs and I had to close it manually at a gas station in Las Vegas... I took it home to the dealer and they said I'd have to get a whole new roof. Needless to say, i never opened it again.

Problem with panoroof...
Hi,
I've recently bought a 2001 C180 Sport Coupé from my brother-in-law, who already told me that the roof wasn't working.
I decided to take a look before letting the pros check it, and this is what I've found so far:
-When I tried to open it, it worked. As I tried to close it again, a loud rattle noise ocurred, and the roof did'nt move at all.
-I closed it manually, not without great effort, because most of the times I turned the allen tool, the roof wasn't moving. I found this very strange, and I gave it another go.
-As I opened the panoroof again, I was watching carefully the mechanism and the motor (pulling the button with the overhead console hanging in my hands). I noticed that as the gear was turning it was kind of sucked upwards. Tried to close it again, and the opposite happened. As soon as I pushed the switch, the rattling noise started and the gear and its axis (where you insert the tool to close it manually) were displaced downwards.
-It was obvious to me that this was part of the problem, and I had an idea. I put a screwdriver narrower than the hole in the axis of the gear, and pushed hard upwards. At the same time, I pushed the switch and ¡oh, magic! the panoroof moved until it was perfectly closed.
-Knowing this, I brought my car to the official MB repair shop in my town, and told them what I found, and asked for the price if I wanted to fix it.
-Results: They want 3000 € to fix the panoroof (they say there are a lot of things broken), 4000 € to replace the entire panoroof stuff...
-As I don't believe it's so badly damaged, I've provisionally fixed it placing a metal ring between the gear axis and the cover that keeps it in place. I'm thinking about a better solution. Besides, I'm trying to find good substitutes for the special sliding compound and lubricant they mention in the official MB guide for mantaining the roof and mechanism...

i was playing around with in the morning, like pressing the button and just manualy pushing it up and down, but gently. Then I left it alone and moved on to doing something else, after an hour i had to go , so i sat down and closed the roof by pressing button....it just close itself, however it did do "clack clack" noise from the motor when it was closing...

Roof mechanism jammed
I have a problem like this. In looking at it the sliders for the guide rail have broken on one side and almost broken on the other looks like regular wear and tear after 10 years. Now I need to name and find the parts. Then it looks as if I need to remove the entire glass to rr the slides. It 'd be nice if anyone has the diagram for the roof mechanism

I have the exact same problem. But fortunately I was able to at least close mine after doing what this guy recommended in another thread:

I think that might be my problem, and maybe yours.
Hope this helps.

I have a 2005 C230 that the sunroof did not want to open, only about 1 inch at a time. I removed the motor and the drive gear for the cables had metal dust on it. I cleaned the gear and I covered it with lithium grease and put the motor back in and moved the roof a couple inches, pulled the motor again, re-greased it and did this a total of 8 times. This greased enough of the cable to lubricate it. Works like new.

My sunroof won't move at all in any direction
CLK 320, 2000. My sunroof is closed and when I push the control switch in any direction nothing happens at all. Fuse? ECU? Other? Where are these components located? Many thanks...

I have the same issue - looks just like yours, except mine is up on the left side if you are facing forward. The curtain stopped closing and makes the infamous clicking sound. I figured I could live with that but now the sunroof is off track and it is going to rain tomorrow.
I'm taking it to a dealership now for an estimate and will let everyone know what they say
My third party mechanic previously quoted me $3-4k just to fix the curtain issue so not going to them for this.

Out Of Control!!
You're probably looking around $6-8k if you're going to fix the curtain and the sunroof.
My recommendation would be to get the sunroof fixed if you're doing to keep the car, get the inside of the sunroof tinted, and don't worry about the curtain.

Tinting is not a bad option at all, Tommy! Cheers.
Just got a call from the dealership. All in all, I lucked out. $165 for the diagnosis, which initially made me miss my mechanic but hey, I got a free cappuccino and loaner car for a day...
They were able to get it closed (for free/included in the $165) so I am set in terms of driving through the rain. If I want to get the sunroof working again, they say I need to replace the right and left rails and the sunroof motor as well. All up, they quoted me $3,300 for that, which is about what my mechanic quoted me too.
Considering that is about 40% of the value of the car, I'll just have to adjust to no working sunroof.

Man up! I understand your logic, but I couldn't deal with the car without the sunroof. I went to the poorhouse last month to get mine completely fixed.

I just got an 02 and right after the seller showed me the roof worked I bought it and on the drive home ran it open...just fine then wouldnt close. Completely locked with the left rear corner up. The shop got it closed by beating the crap out of everything and now it is "closed" but air leaks and the glass bounces up and down over bumps. They have said I can get a new one or they can seal the top. Really love that German technology.
