W203 C240 stolen...
#52
the car stolen are mostly hunted by dishonest independent MB shop, say, a flooded C240 go to dealer for repair quote, and find out that the new OEM parts are more expensive than what it's value, and sale at bargain price to used car dealer, that dealer then go to MB shop, and pay 1/4 of what dealer asked, then bad guys go out for a specific model year car, steal it, and swap parts, then, sale the car. There is a chain of business of this kind in Asia.
I supose to start a engine shouldn't be too hard, if they got control on fuel pump, ignition and so on, they can drive away with just basic service runing, do not subestimate those bad guys network and knowladge, and that's why they need to mess around engine bay for connections.
To prevent this, use good steering wheel lock, and GSM / GPS tracking alarm, they can be jammed, but you got pretty good chance of that bad guys don't have the expensive jammer, and go for next target, a pretty strong steering wheel lock, will set them back quickly, as it involve another tools and equipment to take them open, not too long (maybe 20 minutes) but enought to push them to next target, too.
If you got all them installed, then they need 40 minute to finish the job, which is too risky.

wow, very interesting stuff to learn in this thread, I thought the MBs where theft proof to. Very crazy.
To the OP, Im sorry your family car was stolen, did you report to your insurance or hear anything yet?

You can steal anything with a flatbed roll back truck. Just drag it on & go. If someone wants it, they can get it.

The problem is that insurance in tw only pay the completly missed car, and those stolen MB usualy apear on road site with only bare frame, hense, not completly lost, and owner get nothing back from it. a "complete" insurance could cost more than US$3000 per year, for C-class, imaginate for E or S class... so the root root problem is that MB make electronic parts price way toooo high, and low quality.

$3000! That sucks! In the US, a C-class is about $600 to $1000 to fully insure per year depending on your driving record & where you live.
CORRECTION; My Benz cost me only $600 a year to fully insure, as does the Escalade.
While I was aware of geographical differences in pricing, I had no idea that pricing varied so much.

To get a better rate you either need to be much older or not in NJ.

I suspect living in NYC/NJ has something to do with that. I guess my estimates are way off then.
I don't even pay that much to insure the Escalade & the Benz with full coverage!

Lol I pay $2800 / year in NJ, and I got a notice in the mail that my rate went up to 3400/year. So i'm switching insurance companies to get back to the $1400 every 6 months.

Sorry to hear about the loss, by the way; I too thought the newer benzes were unstealable.
